    Advertising

I think last.fm should be more selective in its choice of advertiser. Although the site has to make money, it can be harmful to the business to have associations with companies or organizations with dubious reputations.

  • Do you mean sceintology with that?

Remember to say "thank you" for the things you haven't had

    I Agree.

It's so simple to block an advertiser with Google Adsense. I've already done it. And it won't bankrupt Last.fm either if one of the worst criminal organisation's ads disappear.

    Don't worry, we're definitely anti-scientology.

Is it adsense? We're still trying to figure out where the ad is being served from, but we'll block it when we do.

  • Scientologists aren't that bad, are they?

Although there is the thing about women not being allowed to see their children for several days after they're born....

Tip for colinemanning & CasimirX : switch back to french lastfm.fr, you won't see it again :P

  • I came to comment on the Scientology ad. I was totally disgusted to see it. Glad it's being gotten rid of.

What a wonderful and simple solution! But I never went to the french version.
And I won't see the artist descriptions either which are larger in the english than in the french last.fm.
(finally I could tell you that each time I saw one of their ads, I click on it, just to make them coughing up money!)

Just saw a Scientology add myself, you guys should be ashamed to allow those to be displayed here. Was going to open a ticket about it, but as i can see other people already did...

Just saw the banner, came over to start a thread, see someone beat me to it. This plumbs new depths. Is there any way we can get this certified, convicted and documented life-destroying cult off last.fm?

  • I am really worried about this. Many people will get to see this potentionally dangerous advertisement. I understand Scientologists are now buisness partners who paid for the campaign. I know what freedom of speech is. I jsut think it's wrong to allow something like this.

  • Freedom of speech does not override freedom of choice :) I think that's a mistake that gets made a lot, especially here on last.fm. It isn't the duty of last.fm to protect the "right" of any person or organization to free speech. That responsibility falls to governments, not privately-owned institutions. Last.fm would be well within its basic legal rights, in just about any western country, to prevent the church of scientology from advertising here. If however last.fm has signed a deal with its advertising provider whereby it relinquishes editorial control over ads, then we're probably stuck with this brainwashing cult's nonsense ....

A lot of people seem to have missed Russ's post, where he states that they're looking into exactly where these adverts are coming from, and they will be blocked from appearing once that's done.

(As for Freedom of Speech, in all honesty it's not even remotely relevant here - "freedom of speech" isn't "freedom to impose your adverts wherever you like", so once they track down the source [I believe the adverts on last.fm are provided by an external company] last.fm are completely entitled to have them blocked, as Russ says they will be doing)

have been seeing it all day, just sent an e-mail to support when I got pointed to this topic. Good to see measures are being taken to get rid of the ad.

  • I did notice the Trojan condoms ads that came up on EVERY page have also disappeared. I understand theres a lot of younger people on here, myself included, and thats perfect targeted advertising... but it's not really appropriate for a music site. :P

Awwwww, I missed it. Someone please inform when the Al-Qaeda ads are up.

I was choking on a cornflake.
You said have some toast instead.
  • I'd actually find it less disturbing if al-Qaeda ads were up because I wouldn't expect the ads to work in al-Qaeda's favour. The bad things about Scientology are far less well known so people can get sucked in far more easily.

In any case, I don't really blame Last.fm here and I'm actually impressed that someone came here and said "we're definitely anti-scientology" and "we'll block it". The company to blame is Google. They've been advertising Scientology for a while and YouTube has been removing non-infringing anti-Scientology content. It's as if Google likes Scientology.

Right, this should be blocked now. If anyone sees any more ads, we need the URL they link to in order to block them.

I'm still seeing them :( Don't know how to get the exact url and I don't want to click on the ad.

Disclaimer: my English could be buggy.
  • I saw the ad this morning about 90 minutes after the time of Ross's last post :(
I did not miss the first one. I just replied the first thought I had. Yes, it's good to see you're trying to solve this case. Keep it up.

can't you just blacklist scientology.org* (with a wildcard?)
