I don't like [insert artists here]

Seems to me that lastfm (and all other social recommenders) suffer from a basic error in what they do: they only know what I listen to, not what I don't listen to, and especially *why* I don't listen to it.

I don't listen to Radiohead, because (IMNSHO) they are horrible, not because I've never heard them before.

This obviously affects recommendations - I can use the popularity slider to get rid of Radiohead from my recommendations, but I'd prefer to get rid of them because their music is awful, not just 'cos they are popular.

Similarly my list of neighbours is useless because while they all share some artists with me, the majority of the rest of the stuff they listen to is not my cup of tea at all. Top of my neighbour list has Pet Shop Boys at number 1 in his chart. Fine, so do I, but he has Kate Bush at number 2. To which I can only say "Yeuch !" And the rest of his chart leans far heavier to Kate than Pet.

So, in short, the new feature I'd like to see is the ability to register the fact that I hate some artists.

Not just that I dislike tracks - I do not want to have to trawl through all of Kate Bush's output just to register that I really, really don't like her. I know this already, I need some way to inform lastfm of this.

I second this, and for not being completely useless post, I'm subscribing to this to see what the Last.fm staff answers :)

I get most of my videogame/anime soundtracks from Galbadia Hotel

Can't you already use the trash can on the recommendations page to tell last.fm to trash an artist that was recommended?

500th Track: It's All About the Benjamins 1000th Track: Diamonds from Sierra Leone (Remix) (feat. Jay-Z) 2000th Track: My Love 2500th Track: Jesus Walks 5000th Track: Playground 10000th Track: 'Round Midnight

Yes, I can use the trashcan, but it is not the same thing. If I trash Radiohead, it does not decrease the likelihood of recommendations based on "similar to Radiohead". I would like to register dislike of Radiohead in such a way as to reduce the chances of lastfm recommending Beck, Coldplay, The Arcade Fire, The Smashing Pumpkins, ...

That list of artists is just the list of similar artists I found on Radiohead's page. But it just reinforces the idea: they are all not in my playlist because I don't like any of them, not because I haven't heard of them.

And (no empirical testing available here) but I betcha that if I trashed Kate Bush it would not reduce that other user's chance of being my #1 neighbour.

Again there's a category error here: trashing a recommendation says "I'm not interested in X", but I want to say "I don't like X" (and "I hate Y")

BTW - since I went to have another look at the trashcan I notice another wee anomaly: How come the trashcan is available for "weekly recommendations", but not for "all recommendations".
