Facebook integration

  • side-effect of linking online & real life identities

I like this idea of facebook integration, and I'm glad you're working with them to get it sorted out. Certainly beats trying to put every band I ever liked into my facebook profile.

There's one thing that concerns me a bit, though, following on from LANjackal's comment about keeping his last.fm profile anonymous for good reason. When I use a last.fm chart picture or widget in a profile on another site, it's obvious who I am here, from the filename or the flash variables. That's fine, generally. I'm happy to share my pseudonymous identity on last.fm with my pseudonymous identity on other sites.

Facebook is different though. It insists on real names, and usually has other details of real life identities, like work and education. I like to keep a bit of breathing space between my online identity and my real one (enough that it's not obvious at a casual glance, anyway - I'm sure I can be found if anyone really cares).

So is it possible that this integration of last.fm data into facebook - recent tracks, top artists, whatever - can be done without its source (i.e. which user account) being obvious to anyone looking at the facebook profile? I know your facebook profile isn't viewable by everyone, but you're not really using its full potential if you don't let, say, people in your networks see a bit about you.

  • I think this will be more of a finding a way use the share feature with your charts and widgets thing than a full blown merge your last.fm name with your facebook account thing. If it is, hopefully there will be a way to remove any hyperlinks back to your profile if you desire, which would do pretty well to helping keep your profile anonymous. But then again, who would actually share someone else's widget or chart. That just seems weird.

  • what about Orkut?? Do they allow live content?

    I second this.

This will bring alot more members here. As for Facebook, I think it won't benefit them to much at all.

  • Won't hurt, and Facebook just underwent a bit of a re-vamp, so they're already trying new things

What about adding this to Bebo?
They have a widget feature too. hmm.

  • If last.fm adds facebook integration, I have a feeling there will be a huge surge of populatiry (for Last.fm)!

  • Meh.

I like my music like I like my people: diverse.

Facebook and Last.fm integration would be fantastic. I like to think of facebook as the 'Championship Manager' of social networking, some proper data driven software that blasts you with information.

Last.fm is equally legendary, plus integration between these two sites might solve my problem of wanting to put Last.fm widgets on facebook, you can already put them on sites like MySpace, lets sort FB out!

Plus it would mean my friends (most of whom are on Facebook) would be more likely to start using Last.fm, which would be good because I have music stuff on here which I obviously can't do on facebook.

It would sort out the lack of my mates on Last.fm, plus the lack of music on Facebook! (Which is the only advantage (Bar customization) MySpace has over it as far as I can tell)

I'm posting here so it shows up in my reply tracker and I get updates.

But I might as well throw in some of my own words. I'm pretty excited that they've started work on this thing, and I can't wait to see what it is. Personally, I think something very simple to start would be fine; something like, a feature that displays your most recent track in your Facebook 'status' bar. So much potential!

I just hope it's not using this. I'd like it to be integrated much more smoothly into facebook and not with some useless "portal" system.

I would love Facebook-last.fm integration. I hope you can embed playlists on facebook etc.

But as people above have said...yes, I too would like to keep my last.fm Pseudonym private. Facebook has a full name, and I would like to keep my internet pseudonyms and my Real Name apart.

Indeed, the option to display your last.fm charts will be entirely at your discretion.

How long until they are implemented on facebook - I am looking forward to this integration immensely.

  • Well, the Facebook Platform just announced is basically a huge opportunity for Last FM to tap that audience. iLike are already signed up.

  • How about they just make it so you can put a widget on your facebook page?

Don't talk before you know all the facts. It makes you look bad.

That would just be like MySpace. The beauty of the Facebook platform is that the API is available to developers to use things like tagging, friends lists, sharing etc. There is a lot of synergy between Last FM and Facebook and I would love to see this realised with LFM integration in Facebook.

Yes, I'd assume that would be the case - no one would be forcing anyone to use the last.fm integration or to show their charts. But I meant more than that: I'd like to be able to show my charts to people in facebook but without revealing to them what my last.fm username is.

    My address is:

    123 abc street
    xyz state
    Country - Blah

    My phone number is:
123 123-1234 (When I don't answer, please leave a message for your own personal enjoyment if you so choose. I won't listen to it.)

I have about a dozen working emails at one given moment, and I replace them after about 6 months. So, you can email me now at abc@here.com and then you'll have to get to me within 6 months before I switch email accounts.

Also, I have email filters to delete and destroy spam.

In order to communicate in real time (i.e. ICQ, AIM, Yahoo, etc...), I will have to accept you through whatever messaging service you might use. None of them accept messages unless you are added to a list.

So, if you can get through all that and want to talk to "jadarite" in facebook, bodybook, buttbook, whateverbook, please do.

"Facebook is different though. It insists on real names, and usually has other details of real life identities, like work and education."

If you insist on giving them your "real" information, then yes. There is no law that says you have to. You can be as anonymous as you want. Password protect your areas so they aren't easily reachable.

If I couldn't create the screen name I have and go anywhere on the net, do anything I want, I would be questioning what is anchoring me to that feeling that my privacy has been compromised.

You may think that is nutso, but there are people who are even more open and think it's silly to make screen names. They think we should use our first and last name on servers. My point is, it is your choice. Try to create an identity you can go anywhere with. Then it won't matter if Last.fm includes your age, height, or daily fecal matter weight.

Hah, yeah, it's interesting that people are willing to give Facebook their real names and info, but are paranoid about sharing that info with last.fm.

You know why that's weird? Because one of the above companies has CIA ties and a terrible privacy policy, and the other doesn't. Wait, which one has CIA ties, you ask?

I'll give you a hint: it starts with F and rhymes with Acebook.

Of course, for me, it doesn't really matter if the CIA knows how much I love Radiohead. So it matters even less if Joe User knows that too.

Hope the last/facebook intergration works. Have a look at this web stats graph iLike are catching up quick….

Like Minimal Techno? ---> You'll love High on Electronic Music
Have diverse and non-mainstream taste in music? ---> See if you qualify for The 1 Percenters group....
  • Mog are also on there.

One can only hope that the 'Facebook Sharing coming soon' teaser on the Widgets page is an indication of Last.FM building on the Facebook Platform.

Yeah, I'm not about to sign up for Mog when there's that nice little tag on the Widgets page and four years of stats in my account. I wish last.fm had been a "launch title" as most of the other apps look pretty raw and useless...
