i think a nice place for it would be between the weekly and overall charts. white background, black letters.

  • Automatically generated tag cloud, please?

    Thanks :)

    Windows 7 Professional // EAC | foobar2000 | WMP12 // LAME 3.99.4 -V 0 --vbr-new

  • Assuming we'd just be using existing artist tag clouds...

... then I can see this being pretty hellish from a calculating point of view... Finding the tags of each artist you've listened to (including all the joke tags people add) and keeping a running total while adding up those from each and every artist you've listened to this week and then turning each one into a font size relative to all the others?

That's pretty hellish... I must admit it constantly amazes me how Last.FM itself keeps running just crunching the numbers it does anyway... I do think it's a nice idea, but doing it for every user (well, every user with it enabled) on top of the normal weekly tracks (I remember the time when those took more than long enough as it was!) sounds like a combination for several servers with smoke coming out of them...... :P

But then I'm probably wrong :)

  • if you tag your tracks, then last.fm creates a tag cloud on your tags page based on music you listen to. Since its also based on the tags you specify, I think its more meaningful.

Like Minimal Techno? ---> You'll love High on Electronic Music
Have diverse and non-mainstream taste in music? ---> See if you qualify for The 1 Percenters group....
  • actually it would be nice if the "favourite tags" box on the profile page displayed this tag cloud - it would save people having to click through.

Like Minimal Techno? ---> You'll love High on Electronic Music
Have diverse and non-mainstream taste in music? ---> See if you qualify for The 1 Percenters group....
  • Visualizing your tags

My last.fm visualization tool can visualize the tag clouds already, this is just a small example of what it can do.

One needs to add his weekly top artists, for example, (or any other artists of interest), than select all the added artists, right click and choose genre tags, and the tag labels will come.

For now, it is just showing them with the same size, and those occuring in multiple artists can be made to be in a more central position.
In the future, I may also read the importance of tags and artists, and change the visual size and importance of tags accordingly.

    Yeah!

    It's simply great. :D

  • I support the cloud idea, it's a great one :D

  • last.fm already has an auto generated tag cloud based on what you play. see here for mine.

  • No, that is a tagcloud based on the tags you yourself have used. The tag cloud suggested here is a tag cloud based on the music you listened to, not a tag cloud based on the tags you made yourself.

  • Another vote for tag clouds. I also agree with some previous posters that they should be cached. There's no need to recalculate the clouds more than once weekly (it seems to me that having it be part of the weekly chart update would make sense). If doing the updates at the same time causes too much server load, then it certainly wouldn't hurt anything to have the clouds update the following day.

I also agree that it should be optional.

    aliekens, thanks!

If it counts, I also think this cloud is a great idea; I'd love to see it on user pages! :)

  • I want them. Now.

Clouds great idea but not enuf. . .

How can my (weighted) tags PLUS my (weighted) artists be used to find other similiar profiles, then to extract from their preferences, specific tracks NOT YET KNOWN TO ME for preview or exposure?

Nothing personal would be shared, of course, but if you and I both like A, G and M, then your list of a1...an, may have instances that may be unfamiliar to me. Your privacy is not compromized if LAST.FM uses that pattern to suggest music to me.

Or is that already happening, and I have missed that detailed point?

I think that's pretty much what the neighbours and recommendation systems are, respectively. Your neighbours are the users with similar profiles, and the recommendations are the music that people with similar tastes like, but you don't listen to.

(Well.. in theory.. I have to say I have actually noticed one or two bands in my recommendations who already have a relatively large number of plays...)

If they were optional (aren't they already, in a sense..?) why not.

But unfortunately I dislike my tagcloud, and find it rather unrepresentative of my listening... stupid taggin' is the problem of course, and not the clouds per se.

  • The best idea yet. If the load is too high, one could calculate these "on the run", ie, a user per 10 seconds or something. That way, the load on the servers will be spread out over the entire week rather than around the update moment (ie, sunday 12:00 GMT).

I'd like this, definitely. It could be included optionally while editing details..
