August 2nd site update - Catalogue Pages

  • August 2nd site update - Catalogue Pages

    Hi everyone,

We just released our latest update to Last.fm. The biggest change is our “catalogue pages” project, where we completely rewrote all artist, track and album pages. Some of you saw it while it was in beta and many of you left comments. We listened to your feedback and tried to incorporate as many of your ideas as possible. We put a lot of work and effort into this project and we’re quite thrilled to be finally able to release it on the live site. The changes include:

    - A bigger, cleaner header section that emphasizes images, one of the most heavily used features of artist pages
    - An easier way to add artists or albums to your library, and a big red love button for track pages
    - An improved statistics area that shows you personalized information about this artist/track/album
    - It’s HTML5, yeah!
    - Improved page performance
    - An event section that not only shows how many people are planning to attend, but also which of your friends are going
    - A more modern, interactive scrobble graph

As well as the new “catalogue” pages we’ve updated the secondary navigation on every page on the site, so the tabs that used to be down the left hand side are now across the top of the page at the right.

For the fuller write-up about how and why we made these changes have a look at our blog, there will be an article there shortly. [Edit:] The blog post is here: http://blog.last.fm/2012/08/03/design-changes-to-lastfm

Besides this big update we also added some small features to the rest of the site:
    * We added a button to the “recent tracks” section on user pages to make it easier to share your most recent music discoveries on Twitter
    * YouTube videos on Last.fm now scrobble

We really hope you like the new pages. Have a nice day and enjoy your music!
    Last.fm

  • No, i don't like the new pages. It looks terrible. I liked it when everything was smaller and compact.

Last.fm = the new Facebook. Too big for their own boots, and make changes for the worse. Well done.

  • I'm digging it. I always disliked how the images weren't emphasized upon. Much better now.

  • Looks really bad dude, but the increased content is pretty nice.

That said, where is the link to label pages from artist pages?

We (everyone I've spoken to and myself) want smaller and compact!

Looks really DUMBED DOWN! Not cool.

  • ugh. looks awful. I hate having to scroll through loads of pointless information that if I wanted access to, I could've just clicked. now I don't really want to leave comments on band pages. being able to change between red and black headers is cool, can we get an option to change between layouts? otherwise i'm dialing back my involvement with the community on this site and using it strictly for the scrobbling feature.

  • About Artist page...

just reposting what somebody else wrote on BETA thread:

    - I cannot find "Recent Activity" – that’s a really neat thing to have on “Artist” and “Track” page, showing all the user activity going on about the Artist – I consider it being a core element of last.fm that should not be discarded! Do last.fm plan to get rid of this functionality altogether? How then users will find other interesting listeners of particular entity? Sure, “Recent Activity” (on Artist and Track pages) can be improved by removing less important elements from it, like: “[user] …added to library” and “[user]... loved <Artist> – <Track>”. Then only valuable stuff will appear there and list won’t experience floods;
    - I cannot find "Related Journals"! That’s even bigger core element than "Recent Activity"! Why last.fm – a user generated content site appears to be wanting to get rid of this is beyond me. Is the target of last.fm to decrease social interaction and intellectual value that expands the overall value and awesome of this site? Sure, majority of users may not be interested in a great read on a good artist, let alone to write something on someone in their Journals, but this intellectual value “indicator” shouldn't be discarded just like that!

  • The changes to my profile are fine but the artist pages are actually harder to navigate. It looks messy with all the big and "blocky" writing and images. Such a shame that the change had to come sooner than later and what's even more disappointing will be the fact that it stays.

  • Dumbed down in the same way that myspace dumbed themselves down. We all remember what happened after that right?

  • I don't like it, too. It's so confusing and unclear now.
In my opinion it was perfect before, but like ambientsorrow said, last.fm is like facebook and always has to improve and improve. sadly those improvements only make it worse.
I don't see anything bad about the old layout.

edit: highfive for the option to change layouts!

Deleting my account because of this.

  • I do like the relocation of the secondary navigation buttons, also the 'cleaner' look of the site is okay, but what you did to the Artist page is awful. What I want to see when I navigate to the artist page are the top albums, my friends' plays, events, similar artists and the shoutbox. Without scrolling (1248x1024) I can only see similar artists right now, to see the shoutbox I have to scroll 3 pages down. Every button, every image, every piece of text and every white space is just too big. In fact, this user was able to create something better than the current layout: http://img35.imageshack.us/img35/5733/flas.png. I hope you could give us the option to at least turn back the recent changes, if not there's always Greasemonkey.

  • terrible

User profile is okay. Artist sites are unnecessarily big.

if anyone from the staff would be so kind as to answer this:
is this the final design for artists, albums, tracks pages?
if that's indeed the case, i can't believe you actually went live with this. no, i mean, i CAN NOT. seriously.
    I am kind of shocked.
    OK.
having said that, and meaning absolutely no disrespect for your designers' work, because i am sure they are merely doing what is being asked of them to do, i'll add that i like the "new" look of our profile pages - but i still have one small (i hope) request: can you please make our username and/or avatar clickable again? i asked for this in the beta forum as well. i hate having to refresh the page from the browser itself. thank you.
the rest i'll learn to live with.

Same. This change is like going from LEGO to DUPLO (or even Megablocks for 1 year olds). This is definitely not an improvement!

I think it's okay for vertical touch screens (tablet PCs etc), but it's far worse than the previous layout for desktop PCs I think. It would be the best if we'd have the choose - maybe set the new one as default for mobile devices, and the old one as desktop default?

  • I feel like I'm blind and use a superbigsize glasses.

All the interesting info is down below so scroll down is needed. If I wanna read about a band info or photos, I go to the wikiedia, rateyourmusic or allmusic. I like Lastfm for its charts and statics, all that are now hidden in the bottom of the pages.

    Cool.
