Scrobbling portable players and iPods (also shuffle) from Winamp

    Hi everyone,

Half a year ago I was looking for possibilities to scrobble tracks from my ipod shuffle using Winamp, but I couldn't find any. I don't use iTunes at all and the official last.fm client only scrobbles tracks played directly in Winamp.

By now there is some support for ipod scrobbling with the official client. It seems like this only works with iTunes though.

That's why during the last few weeks I wrote my own scrobbler using the ActiveWinamp plugin by Shane Hird.

And, hey, we need a name...

    It's the AWAAS, the ActiveWinAmpAudioScrobbler

Of course it is nothing as fancy and shiny as the official last.fm client, but it does have some features that might interest some of the Winamp fans.

Here are a couple of features:
    • Scrobbles any tracks from Winamp
    • Tracks from portable media players which report the playcounts and playtimes to the Winamp media library get scrobbled too.
    • Works with iPod shuffle
    • Scrobbles tracks from a user-selected Winamp Smart View
    • Optionally sends "Now Playing" notification to last.fm
    • Updates "playcount" and "last played" times of the Media Library according to the rules of last.fm (If 50% of track or more than 240 seconds were played the track "counts as played")
    • Caches played tracks if temporarily offline
    • Logs submissions and errors
    • keeps a low profile, doesn't bother you

If you are an interested and brave individual, it would be great if you could do some alpha testing.
Well, I have been using it for a while and both my Winamp Library and my last.fm account are in excellent shape. ;)

You can either respond to this post or send me a private message, and I'll send you the program.

AWAAS is released. You can find it at sourceforge:

  • iPod/WinAmp-user signing up ;)

I'd like to test it for you... and alpha-testing has been a while for me :P

Remember to say "thank you" for the things you haven't had
  • I'd like to try this out please.

Used to use Amarok to scrobble my Ipod track, but I'm stuck with Windows for a while :-(

  • I would be interested if you are still looking. Since the problems with iTunes and iScrobbler I have been looking for a way to get my plays scrobbled reliably.

I am me, and that is all that counts.

Yes, anybody who is interested can test.
I just need an email address to send you the program. It's probably best if you PM me at Flo_La and include your email.

In the meantime I have updated the readme. Now there is more information about installation and usage to make the testing easier.

  • alright, so this works for other kinds of iPods too, right?

to answer the last two posts:
Yes, it is programmed so that it should work with any kind of portable player that syncs its playcounts and times to the Winamp media library.
For ipods I recommend ml_ipod http://mlipod.sourceforge.net/, it's what I use with my ipod shuffle. With the newest patch - if you are using Winamp 5.5 - it should work with the new ipod classic (the 3G)

Thanks to ivanko021's testing I was able to find the problems with the installation.
That's why I included a batch file into the package to do the installation. That should make the AWAAS a lot more usable.

I am also happy that my testing of the scripts with Winamp 5.5 was successful. So AWAAS should be compatible with all Winamp 5.x version.

So who's in for another round of testing?
You can email me Flo_La at vollbio.de and I'll send you the package.

I'm really interested in this.. I'm using my windows mobile phone for music playing and I'd like to scrobble the songs that I play on it.
I've tried other scrobblers, but this seems a better idea.. I'm using winamp to drop music on it, now I only need to find an option to update the played count.

Can you send me the program too?

    Thx!

If you could find a way of having your Winamp media library updated with the songs that you played on your Windows Mobile phone that would be great. Then the AWAAS should work for scrobbling songs.

Just send me an email, and you can have to program for testing. Would be nice if we could get that to work for Windows Mobile devices, I myself would be interested in that too.

  • Question Edit

Alright. I guess what I should have asked was

Will this work for manually managed iPods?

Sure. As far as I know Winamp (especially the ml_ipod plugin) doesn't even have that distinction between automatically and manually managed iPods. No automatic sync of your songs is required. Just the syncing of the playtimes and counts that I mentioned before has to happen in order to scrobble the songs.

For scrobbling tracks played by Windows Media Player Mobile, have a look at this group.

  • Man, I just looking for it!

It will be a pleasure to alpha test it for you!

    PM me too!

    Keep on walking that road!

    the state of things

At this point I would still be happy if someone tested my scripts and then actually gave me some feedback. A few people did that and were helpful with nailing down a few minor issues. Thanks to ivanko021, Bruno_MacLeod and the other testers so far.

I think it is safe to say that the AWAAS works with Windows XP (English and German versions at least, probably most languages with "western" type sets).
It works with both my ipod shuffle (2G) and my ipod nano (3G).
Also, all Winamp versions 5.3 and later seem to work.

However, ActiveWinamp has some issues on Windows Vista. Hopefully Shane Hird will be able to get a fix for that soon.

This means AWAAS is restricted to XP users only at the moment.

The AWAAS can really only scrobble the songs you played to last.fm. It cannot sync the playcounts and times with Winamp.

So this applies to anyone who wants to know if AWAAS can scrobble your player:
    You should
    • look for the playcount and last played time in the Winamp media library
    • connect your player and move a few songs to it
    • listen to them on your player
    • connect player again, (let it sync with the media library)
    • check the playcount and playtime
If those have updated then AWAAS can scrobble your tracks.

  • I'll give it a go

Hey i would like to try this. Thanks in advance

  • hm.

I would like to try this. I'm a recent convert from itunes to winamp (and glad I did). However, from the postings, the obvious requirement for this to work is the iPod syncing the play count / times to Winamp. Mine does not do this, how can I make it?

    Looks interesting...

    Hi Flo_La,

Why don't you upload the AWAAS to last.fm's download section or somewhere?

And are there any alternatives to that?

    news

    Hi everybody,

the good news is that I implemented two major new features:
    • tagging tracks right out of Winamp
You can choose songs from your playlist window in Winamp and add tags on last.fm to them.
    • last.fm radio streams
You can play last.fm radio streams (like your recommendations, some user's playlist or personal radio station, etc.) in Winamp.

Also I hope that I have resolved the issues with non-english operating systems. AWAAS should work under Vista now too. Unfortunately I had to sacrifice compatibility with Winamp versions below 5.5 but I think that is worth it. ;)
AWAAS now comes with a "real" exe installer that installs it as a Winamp plugin very easily.

My plan is to mail the new version to my brave testers and then, given there are no more blockers, I'll apply for an official client ID from last.fm.
If they approve it then I can upload it somewhere (probably sourceforge).

@dmee Until then, however, I am not supposed to make it publicly available.

Again, whoever is interested in serious testing can write me at
Flo_La [at] vollbio.de and I'll send the installer.

Thanks to everyone so far and
    Happy testing!

  • Help with activewinamp on vista?

    Flo_La,

I am working on a plug-in using activewinamp and I am having a problem with compatibility with Vista. I am guessing this is the problem you solved.

Any chance you can let me in on the tweaks you made to get activewinamp to work with Vista?

    Thanks in advance!

  • Unknown smart view field

What is supposed to go in the smart view field? When the login screen first appeared, "audio" was already in the smart view field. However, the plugin was obviously not activated and a dialogue box popped up asking for smart view name. I've tried "audio" and "none", but have not got any further with installing this.
