Last.fm's secret army of music enforcers will storm into your house, and remove your ears.

Alternatively, you won't be able to listen to any music on the site. All of the other site features (including charts/scrobbling, chat, etc) will remain available to you.

That said, you do seem to be a subscriber now... happy listening!

  • uh.. so why did this happen all of a sudden after 2 years of listening to my library and recomendations?!... this is a bit of a piss-off to say the least...

...I guess I must have been wrong... but I thought you only had to subscribe to get loved tracks and stations in addition to library and recomendations... I thought those two were what constitiuted the "free" section....

why all of a sudden out of the blue do I get slapped with this "supprise... after 7500 tracks you suddenly only have 30 left" banner... thats weak

    guh?

Not enough advertising revenue being generated in some countries.
It is all down to economics, maybe after the global recession ends and advertising revenue picks up again, the decision will be reversed ... Maybe

    solution

change your IP-adress to that one from a country where Last.fm is still free, currently those are USA, UK or Germany.. just use a vpn-client to do so..

    I did that a few days ago^

Well, I installed the program at least, I havn't actually run it yet.

Also, its a 30 tracks free trial for the radio in countries outside of the US, UK and Germany, they started that april 1st. It was free untill then.
But yeah, you could sign up with another e-mail address and then get another 30 days, but since probably everyone is going to do that, LastFM will most likely start checking the emails and IPs you sign up with.

  • To the guy saying above that people will sign-up multiple times. I'm sorry but 2eur (that's 3USD converted to eur, dunno why anyone would pay in eur, it's just more expensive) isn't worth the hassle of re-signing up.

  • Well, personally I don't mind, but this does seem like a really sudden change that they're trying to pass off as something that's always been this way.

I just bought 6 months for $18, which is certainly worth it. I love this site and it's helped me discover a lot of music, so that's a pretty modest contribution they're asking. I do think they should have a discounted price for extended subscriptions though.

My only concern is that the site depends on having a large userbase in order to generate connections between artist and suggestions for new music. Hopefully the userbase won't diminish in any significant way as a result of this change...

Not really. These worked just as well when the site was half this size (only 2 years ago).

I'd be interested to find out how big the userbase is after all this settles down. Wonder where I could find out?

  • :))

well, they had to suck at something in the end. at this rate they just fall back in popularity and webistes like musicovery, deezer and other tons of subscriber based webisted will catch up. Because that's why last.fm was popular. I know for sure that in my country people will preffer to give up.

Oh, and I am sure they won't give up on the policy... people get used to money ;). You know, why earn less when you can earn more? :D

And I speak as a fan of the webiste. Guys, you grew up so big because what you offered. Others will grow up even bigger because of things you don't offer ;)

    Haha, I am disappointed.

  • Why not just scrobble what is on the hard drive of yours?

Wow, dear owners, to say the least, this is the one single most upsetting development I have experienced since the time my hotmail account was deleted unexpectedly because I did not log in for 30 days. Ever since I have nothing to do with Hotmail services.

You know, I wouldn't give a damn about 3 dollars, but this entire shit is especially annoying as you only make certain regions pay for listening. This thing does not refer to the bigger member states of the EU. So it seems like an illegal move. However, apart from the fact that it is against the law (European Economic Area), it is so sudden, as if somebody wrote FU on the screen. 30 tracks? Come on! At least you could have warned people something like this is on the air.

... and I am also very annoyed as I personally wrote long lines of appraisal about your service all over the online media in my country. Now this makes me look like an idiot.

    Yours sincerely.

  • Goodbye LAST.FM

    EVER.... Goodbye For Ever!
I used to like this website, but lol I find a lot more music via torrents or other cool MORE FREE sites. I started not long ago sharing my music with VLC. But bah who cares you dont wanna gather info about what I listen I dont care... that was not usefull to me anyways, I think Myspace is a lot better and older so Adios Last.FM

I think with this new Policy you will be fast enought the last Website to be visited on the WWW, You guys really suck and im pretty sure you were making enought money to live with the Last.fm you had before... but you guys just wanted more. I seriously dont care about this shitty Website and im just never gona talk about it to anyone else now, This is a Shame you wanna make pay the people ONLY FOR LISTENING wtf... I would not even pay for listening to music I have never heard before... Thats why people COPY the music, so they can ear it, then buy it if they like...

The artists who are scared of people making Illegal COPY of their music are the biggest Faggots on this Planet EVER... And I Spit on them like I spit on this Website. FREE ART is the only way to discover new Artist and EVENTUALY buy some new music, WHO WOULD PAY TO EAR SOMETHING THEY ARE NOT GOING TO LIKE ?
lol stupidest move ever Adios !

I'm working on it ;) It's going to take about 8 days to get some decent results; first we need a full week where only subscribers (and the UK/US/DE guys) are able to listen to radio streams.

Would indeed be great if you can get some figures 8)

  • Goodbye LAST.FM

I have no vitriol to make cutting remarks but am a little saddened that a nice site has committed hara-kiri. Maybe if you'd given us some warning I'd have paid but my nose is out of joint simply because from one day to the next I'm suddenly on a trial. There are other solutions out there!

I thought I listen the word 'community' before. what a shame!!!

Last.fm the "social community" which said 'music for free' now wants to be paid! nonetheless in all countries except US, UK, and germany.

    nice, isn't?

I'm not sure how you're going to do that. Blackmail someone at Last.fm to tell you? B-)

If you're just looking at the radio streaming people, I won't be counted, but I'm here until they charge for scrobbling (maybe after that too).

Did I hear that right? Mondegreens - for the misheard word.

Hmm, I think I might've got people overexcited at the prospect of stats...

I wasn't planning on anything particularly complex. Babs was talking about tracking the size of the userbase, so I was just plotting the number of listeners of the top 10 most-scrobbled artists (Radiohead, Coldplay et al) to see whether there was a noticeable dip this week.

That said, all of the top 10 artists have more listeners this week than last week... ABANDON STATS! :D

  • I don't think so.

Adios last.fm. The industry is not getting a drop of my blood. Even with the nice interface and the great usability I've seen to grow over the years. Too many alternatives avaliable even for a lazy bastard like me.

And give me my now RIAA-infected scrobbled data back: Your subscription to preferences has just expired.

Unless you're not in the US that is. In that case you can still use it you ask nicely and swear you never bought anything from Metallica.
