I'd like to issue a full and categorical denial of this. We've never had any request for such data by anyone, and if we did we wouldn't consent to it.

Of course we work with the major labels and provide them with broad statistics, as we would with any other label, but we'd never personally identify our users to a third party - that goes against everything we stand for.

As far as I'm concerned Techcrunch have made this whole story up.

Good. Because as soon as this happens, you can expect me to close my account.

    This better be bullshit.

The staff member who posted here could be lying, but only time will tell.

This site should have never sold to CBS. Fuck. I'd rather be a part of an independent company then join those fuckers. Only a handful of corporations own 95%+ of our fucking culture as it is.

Not sure i've you've noticed but those were no regular staff-members. Plus, you already have had in this thread and other threads abundant replies as to the veracity of Techcrunch's bs.

    following up juepucta's post above:

@TheShadowstorm - what more assurance do you need? no fewer than 4 staffmembers have spoken up unequivocally, starting off with Russ' categorical denial, and RJ's dismissal of the techcrunch "story" on the article page itself as "utter nonsense and totally untrue", identifying himself clearly as one of the founders.

and you think they could be lying?

    Nice one. Thanks mate.

Just wanted to be sure ;)

Now I don't have to false tag a bunch of songs as being from U2 on the new album with song titles like 'Bono should die in a fire' -- saved me a bunch of time.

  • This rules, thanks for dispelling it guys! I always knew I could trust last.fm.

    Thanks

Thanks to the staff who posted, putting this to rest in clear, unequivocal terms.

It is essential, I think, for scrobblers to feel like we are the customer here, and that the real reason you have built this vast intricate palace is *the music*.

Techcrunch were given the story by a rival online music service to last.fm, like most lazy journalists they did not bother to check its authenticity.

I would be more concerned about the rival service, if that is the way they conduct business what else would they be prepared to do ??

  • But seriously, you guys. The RIAA doesn't need last.fm to give them scrobbling data. It's all over your (public) profile, after all.

Not that the RIAA could make any kind of proof from that or link your profile to your person, but still.

    Dude.
    That was awesome.

I left a comment with @techcrunch on Twitter.

  • Oh come on!

At the end of the day, as long as British privacy laws haven't been broken, I couldn't care less. As mentioned by several other people, people who are caught listening to U2 should be taken round the back and shot anyway.

And you could also expect most of the Last.fm staff to walk out of the office door and never return.

  • I don't see why some people got scared by this. You can anytime take a track by any band and rename it into whatever you like. There is nothing any anti-piracy orgnization can do about this, or use any information even if they got it from last.fm (which I would never expect to happen to begin with).

Why would you want to do that? After all this time, we've been trying to get people to tag correctly. Now, we even have auto tag corrector.

Twitter users RT this " I just received a tip @erickschonfeld at #techcrunch is a Pedophile"

  • Denial or not, as a long time Last.fm user, you can be sure I will close my account and walk away if this is true. Frankly, some posts from people claiming to be employees denying it is not the final proof to reassure me. I'm guessing management has their fingers on this one.

  • I'm not sure if these quotes have been mentioned or not, so here goes:

Jonty Wareing - February 20th, 2009 at 5:02 pm PST

What annoys me is that people are deleting accounts and losing their entire scrobbling history based on shoddy journalism.

This hurts those people who have spent years carefully collecting their data far more than last.fm as a whole.

Jonty Wareing - February 20th, 2009 at 5:20 pm PST

As a followup, we have now stopped the job that removes users marked for deletion, so if you did delete your account in haste and want your scrobbles back, please contact our support team.

    Sounds fair to me.

Why do you say "people claiming to be employees"? They've also posted in this thread, from their Last.fm staff accounts.

  • Gotta love super-cynical people who won't listen to either side's presentation of the facts but instead decide to make their own (stupid) conclusions.
