Posting lyrics... again...

I understand how users posting lyrics is a copyright violation. However, if the artist wrote the song and owns the lyrics, it seems they should be able to post.

And it looks like they can. The fact that the Cure's track page for "If Only Tonight..." has a section for lyrics and even an expansion page for the lyrics (similar to what is done for videos) suggests that there is indeed a way to do this.

So, could someone please tell me - what's the story? TIA.

AFAIK, often not the artists don't even have the right to display the lyrics for their songs, as these are often managed by separate publishing companies, and they have to pay for the right to display the lyrics on their own sites.

There is a lyric search service called LyricFind which has licenses with the publishers allowing them to provide access to the lyrics. Last.fm are trialling lyrics on track pages (in the U.S. and Canda only at present) via a partnership with LyricFind.
