  • Last.fm is going for FULL SCREEN ads on the background, totally rape

So was browsing and then i got this:
    http://img166.imageshack.us/img166/3497/musiclastfm121664615494hs7.png

What the hell? Looking at the url of the background:
    http://cdn.last.fm/customisation/2008_moto/skin.2.jpg

Customisation? What's going on here, i hope the they are not so fucking stupid enough to let us make our own backgrounds to make up for the shitty layout CAUSE THIS IS NOT THE SOLUTION.

    Goddamnit.

This is very likely a person who used the stylish firefox addon or something else to change the stylesheet for what they are viewing. It would only be for the person who made it to see, other people wouldn't see it.

Unfortunately, that doesn't seem to be the case. Others have reported the same thing and the url of the image belongs to last.fm.
I predicted this back in the beta group forums and I was told that this wouldn't happen. Looks like I was right.

  • Hmmm... Appears I read the OP a little too quickly.

There does appear to be something strange there.

    I stand corrected.

Though the main content of the site covers absolutely anything add like. To me the picture is just a spring of red and black on the site... Very odd.

This is part of an advertising campaign for Motorola (we've done these before - it's not a new site thing). If you're a subscriber, you shouldn't be able to see it.

It should be paired with a Motorola leaderboard (banner) ad at the top of the page. We had a bug where it wasn't earlier this morning, so that's why you got that rather confusing page.

Hi Russ, I'll go personal here.

I known I'm just one single user out of millions, but for me Last,fm is not just a web out millions.

As it's not for most of us, we have made friends here, we have brought previous friends here, for many of us this is part of the real life.

I have created hundreds of artists bios, uploaded hundreds of pictures, added hundreds of tags, all in the spirit of helping others, and never asked a penny for that.

It's true that I stopped whitelisting Last.fm in my adblock and that I erased my listening habits when I got angry because you didn't solve long-standing problems, but never vandalized the work done, a work I did out of my heart because I love my fellows and trusted you.

I've also created a group that only has a few more than 200 users, but that is very important for me and that has supposed many hours of unpaid work for me and other members, a group that puts Last.fm in the first page of Google if you search for "Endangered languages", along with really important people like the UNESCO.

An we never asked you anything but you keeping improving your beloved son.

And you started doing that, but at the same time you are telling us that what you are going to make out of our work, our beloved son, is just a place holder for mobiles' ads?

What's going to be next, CocaCola ads in between the songs?

I fell sad, I fell betrayed.

Are you really in such a bad financial situation? Where did all the CBS money go?

tartalo, do you have any idea the amount it costs to run a site like this? While i saw the page earlier and wasnt keen on it, knowing that if i paidto use the site it wouldnt be there was enough to jsutify it for me....

And you started doing that, but at the same time you are telling us that what you are going to make out of our work, our beloved son, is just a place holder for mobiles' ads?Eh? did u just forget about the whole music part? Its still there (mostly)
An we never asked you anything but you keeping improving your beloved son
Actually the last.fm staff have recived quite a few requests over time. Check the rest of this forum. Also, las.tfm is not the son of anyone afaik.
Are you really in such a bad financial situation? Where did all the CBS money go? I wouldent like that kinds of ads either, but i cant tell for sure if its a good decision. It will always be a trade-of situation and if a few of those ads can bring good music to many ppl it would be worth it. Of course one cant know for sure which motives are behind, but currently i dont see any reasons to make such asumptions.
There is a saying: "Expect the worst, hope for the best". Alot of ppl seem to forget about the last part atm.

I'm not a subscriber, so I should be subject to ads, but I don't recall ever seeing something quite so monopolistic (in terms of space, etc.) on the old site.

Will these be consistent throughout the site for non-subs (i.e., on every page)? If not, wouldn't it be quite disruptive to the visual design of the site as a whole - a different colour for every page visited?

    That's not true.

    Subscription Benefits

    No ads
You won’t see them; visitors to your page won’t see them. No one will, because they won’t exist.

By the way, I have ads on my user page. You can see them when you're logged out; visitors will see them too.

Well, you're not supposed to see them. Looks like you're experiencing a bug.

That's interesting it says that as if I recall I've always seen ads on my my page when I was logged out, is that a new subscription benefit which is bugged or did someone fill in that section wrong when they updated the site :P

    Annoyed

paulrichardcook said: Well, you're not supposed to see them. Looks like you're experiencing a bug.

You know, I was able to play music from the site this morning, now nothing works. I can still upload from my itunes, but that's it. My Top Tracks Player (my user player) doesn't work; and the players on artist pages no longer work. I think that this is a legitimate reason to be annoyed. I'm using IE7, which works on every internet site, except this one; and I'm not going to switch to Firefox or whatever to make it work.

I'm still wondering why they decided to implement this system right before a weekend, when there would be no one on staff to help fix anything.

    Paul,
You still have ads on your page. I just checked.

    Vivian

  • Strange, i am not able to see these ads. I checked with both firefox and explorer while not being logged in. Do both of you see these ads on all subsriber profile pages or only at some? Do they apear randomly? Either way i dont see how it should be possible - "because they won’t exist"

When you log out you need to refresh the page; that's when you'll see them.
I see them on all subscriber pages.

    LAST FRAUD!

They're there on my profile too. And I realized that they always have been there, even on the old version of last.fm.

How stupid I was when I payed the subscription for so much time!

I'm tired of FRAUDS. The corruption on Brazil is enough! But now I have to face it here at last.fm.

    Depressing... :(

Big deal with the ads, listen to the music. The ads are not intrusive at all, and I am someone who doesn't really like the new site design.

Good for you! Don't waste your time on web support then. Bye

By the way, I can't listen to any of the music online; so, it is a big deal.

Why I didn't subscribe? I've said it in the forums more that once but I don't expect any user to remember: I disagree totally with the personal tags system that set apart the subscribers from the rest losing the benefit of all the collaborative tagging if they want to enjoy the personal tags benefit and have proposed different systems so that subscribers are not set apart of a collaborative system yet have some benefits. If you are interested I can google for you some of these ideas.

Why I stopped white-listing AdBlock in Last.fm? Because I got angry after seeing that in over a year not a single recognisable new feature had been added to the site despite the very same problems kept being pointed in the Feedback forum, and it's not that people didn't come with creative ideas. This has started to change and we have some new features here, but the price is, irony, full page ads? Is there anything more intrusive than that? Yes ads in the music stream, that's why I asked, if that's to come I want to know it to stop contributing here before I hurt myself more.

OK. As I understand it, logged out users can see ads on subscribers' pages. That's bug, we'll fix it, but that's not what this thread is about.

We aren't going to do audio ads.

Are you really in such a bad financial situation? Where did all the CBS money go?

If you mean the $280m, that went to the people who owned last.fm before CBS, it didn't go towards paying our bills.

CBS aren't going to throw their money into a black hole (especially given the current economic climate). They expect us to make money (or at least not lose money), and running this business is expensive. Anyone who invested in or bought last.fm would expect us to do the same, it's not CBS being unreasonable. It's business.

We're well aware that people hate ads, and we screen them to make sure that they're not awful. But we need them to keep last.fm free.
