From The Dallas Observer:
For quite some time I’ve been an unrelenting whore regarding this conferette thing — pushing NX35 on Pete Freedman the first time I met him, and doing the same with Daniel Rodrigue the first time I met him. Today I was actually minutes away from calling up Robert Wilonsky hisself to put a not-so-subtle bug in his ear, too, when we learned the Dallas Observer would indeed care to involve themselves with the Conferette.
The arrangement seems right. The Observer has been supporting Denton bands for a long, long, long time. They were the first publication to give any esteem to a bunch of earlier Denton acts trying to scrape things together in town, and they were the first reference point when readers started peeking in on Denton from abroad. Without a doubt — the D.O.’s contribution to getting Denton heard elsewhere has been as vital to the growth of Denton’s music scene as have been the artists that populate it.
Just this last year, with the arrival of Freedman at the D.O., also came the addition of a weekly Denton column, penned at first by Dave Sims (it’s Xmas baby please come home), and now handled by another Denton local, Daniel Rodrigue, forever ending 35-vulsion: the tendency in D.O. music writers to burn valuable ink lamenting the long drive instead of propping a band or show (somewhere in the D.O. graveyard there is a story about departing for Denton, and giving up and turning around at Lake Lewisville — serious).
ANYWAY, thank you for the steady coverage. The drive was a bitch, we’re familiar. The Denton music scene wouldn’t be in near as good shape without the help you’ve given it over the years in your big Dallas weekly. And in regards to this new arrangement between you guys and us, thanks for that, too.
