Acts I reviewed for Rave:
Friday July 29
At the sun-drenched Amphitheatre, The Kills do what they do best – kill. Clad in all black, Jamie Hince and Alison Mosshart make us sexy-moan with the older fave Kissy Kissy, but it’s still the Blood Pressures songs – Future Starts Slow, Heart Is A Beating Drum, sing-along DNA and Satellite – that rock the hardest.
Having previously slain the Laneway crowds, the four ladies of Warpaint immerse the GW McLennan gathering in a sea of bewitching vocals, shimmering guitars and dense drumbeats. Emily Kokal and Theresa Wayman’s twin six-string work recalls Siouxsie & The Banshees’ finest moments, while a breathtaking run through Undertow marks the apex of an hour-long set.
Much like their hometown compadres Fat Freddy’s Drop last year, the Australia-frequenting Wellingtonians The Black Seeds firmly establish that every Splendour needs to have plenty of heady NZ grooves happening. … -
