Fri 30 Apr – Neurotic Deathfest 2010

After a good night’s sleep I went down to 013 again for day 2. By the time I arrived it was time for Dying Fetus, a 3 person American death metal combo on the main stage. A nice band to get started with, order a first beer and get in the right mood for more death metal to come.

Next on the main stage was Immolation, a death metal group from New York, with a classic line up: 2 guitarists, drummer and singing/grunting bass player. Along with Suffocation they are the best known death metal acts from the Big Apple, a city notorious for its hardcore and hiphop acts. Singer/bass player Ross Dolan rivals Chris Barnes in the ‘longest hair of the festival’ contest. His hair nearly reaches his ankles. You wonder how he’s able to play his bass guitar when his hair is all over the place after he had done some headbanging. Immolation just released a brilliant new record ‘Majesty And Decay’. A dark and gloomy record…

Een uitverkocht Neurotic Deathfest vormt een schril contrast met de matig bezochte editie van 2009. De organisatie heeft er dit jaar alles aan gedaan om een goed programma samen te stellen en promoten. 013 is een weekend lang het domein van metalfans die extreme muziek graag in grote hoeveelheden consumeren...

Fri 30 Apr – Neurotic Deathfest 2010

While too many people went to Amsterdam on Queens Day, or tried to go there but never made it, a couple of thousand metalfans, including me, went to Tilburg for 2 days of extreme metal called the ‘Neurotic Deathfest’.

While open air metal festivals in The Netherlands are having a hard time (no Sonisphere and no Waldrock this year), indoor metal and hard rock festivals are doing better than ever. Roadburn sells out in no time each year. So did the Eindhoven Metal Meeting last December and the same goes for the Neurotic Deathfest. All three festivals are held in medium sized clubs that can accommodadte 2.000 to 3.000 people. Like Roadburn Neurotic Deathfest is held in 013 Tilburg. Fans come from all over Europe. Some of the languages I heard this weekend: English, German, French, Spanish, Finnish (I think) and a Scandinavian languae (I guess Swedish).

Koninginnedag, is dit een bedreiging of juist een kans voor festivals die niets te maken hebben met de 'oranjesfeer'? Kans. Vandaag is de eerste dag van het deathmetal festival Neurotic Deathfest. De bezoekers hebben weinig tot niets met deze chauvinistische feestdag. Het festival is dan ook een week van te voren stijf uitverkocht. Echter zal de datum maar weinig invloed hebben gehad op de verkoopcijfers, de namen zijn al reden genoeg om je vingers af te likken.

Er is duidelijk gekozen om iets meer te variëren in de line- up, al is het portie deathmetal bands nog altijd het beste vertegenwoordigt. Aborted is geen uitzondering, de moderne deathmetalband speelt een thuiswedstrijd. De Belgen staan voor tweede keer in rij op Neurotic Deathfest, dit keer op tour met Rotting Sound. De keuze om ze te laten aftrappen is geslaagd, er is nog genoeg ruimte om te bewegen en al snel is er een mega pit die niet geëvenaard zal worden op het festival. …
