    Sat 20 Feb – Soundwave 2010

An excited buzz hanging thick in the air and hordes of black T-shirt-clad, pierced and tattooed punters filing into the Showgrounds can only mean one thing: Soundwave is on. Arguably Brisbane’s favourite annual festival, this year’s bill has been touted as the most impressive one in a while and we can’t help but feel pumped as we beat the brief rain and get issued with our wristbands and one requisite fluoro orange photographer’s vest. To start off, who cares about Closure In Moscow getting dumped from the bill over some bullshit dispute – bring on the rock & roll, the free water and the half-strength, double-priced alcohol! On second thoughts, can we just have the first two…

By the time we join the mass of people moving towards Stage 1, intelligent metal purveyors Isis (whose last two numbers we heard from distance) have already finished playing – a shame, as we duly get informed by friends heading to see punkers Alexisonfire that it was a very impressive set indeed. …

Golf clap for the organisers behind the Brisbane leg of Soundwave 2010, folks. After tickets purportedly sold out the day before, the public demand for Australia's premiere metal and hardcore tour is met with more than adequate numbers of security, food stalls, police, and toilet facilities to ensure a comfortable experience. The main stages now operate a Big Day Out-like 'D' barrier structure, whose stage-side thoroughfares were blocked with 15 shoulder-to-shoulder security guards - yes, I counted them - to stop enthusiastic fans swarming the area. It's bizarre, but it seems to work for the later acts. The only sour points occurred when bottlenecks formed between the showground bowl and the entrance to the four smaller stages, which resulted in some patience-testing crowd coagulation.

"Thanks for acting like you know who we are…

    Soundwave 2010: The Aftermath

After the ordeal that was Soundwave ‘08, I needed a year off before giving this festival another chance. I’m glad I did, because this was without a doubt the best festival I’ve ever been to. Yes, the lineup was great and all that, but they also had free water. That’s right folks, FREE WATER. Anyone who whinged about the vendors selling water for $5 a bottle clearly likes complaining more than hydrating themselves.

Since Closure In Moscow were unceremoniously kicked off the festival for being “ungrateful cunts” (the promoter’s words, not mine), Canadian psychobilly band The Creepshow were the first on the main stages, and I really enjoyed them.

Sunny Day Real Estate are a truly underappreciated band, and their 12:30 slot on the main stage did them no favours. Members of Paramore and Jimmy Eat World were watching and singing along sidestage, which was cute. They played all the songs I wanted to hear from “Diary” way too…
