Tue 24 Mar – Alice Russell, Asa
Last night I caught Alice Russell's show and she's an amazingly gifted musician. She worked the crowd and was really engaging. Moreover, she made us all get up and dance for her last number. I was expecting her more bluesy or jazzy songs to take full stage at, of all places, Yoshi's Jazz Club. Instead she was full of pep in her step and gave us funk and soul tracks.
Asa was someone I never heard of until I bought the ticket, but she has good chemistry with the audience and a beautiful Nina Simone-esque voice. She even did two songs by Nina - and they were damn good.
The concerns I had with last night were entirely on the venue and not of the calibur of talent. Frankly, the service was a little wack...but shit happens.
