    Sun 8 Feb – Ledisi

A church and booty affair was what Ledisi called this, the last and ninth sold out show at her homecoming engagement at Yoshi's. Her eight piece band have a very organic feel and encourage her to display her abundant talents - her golden voice, her warm gospel-inflected take on new millennial soul, her effortless forays into jazz scatting ala Sarah Vaughan (Monk's Straight No Chaser was given the a cappella treatment, satisfying the jazz purists), standards (What a wonderful world from her recent non-traditional take on Christmas songs). She preached and flirted - her patter was a mix of Etta James and Millie Jackson, but mostly she sang, letting loose her stupendous voice. The girl has pipes and yet is in complete command of her vocal instrument. She writes personal songs and lets the groove work on you. She's a soul singer, she's your Best Friend, it's Alright. It was a sermon at the jook joint. Ledisi came home and sang. And there was much Joy in the land.
