Idiosyncratic songwriter Carla Bozulich has followed her muse, unflinchingly, down a variety of paths over the course of a near twenty year career, espousing a singular eclecticism at every turn. Her latest endeavor, Evangelista, is an experimental rumination on the darker sides of blues, country and folk, a collaborative effort that includes musicians from the Constellation Records camp. Their latest, Hello, Voyager, is a profound success, one that Stylus has called “fascinating.”
Colourmusic play second, a quintet that write complex orchestral works that are rollickingly theatrical. Their rather curiously named debut - F, Monday, Orange, February, Venus, Lunatic, 1 Or 13 - speaks to a conceptualism they embrace unabashedly, on both record and stage.
French classical musician Agathe Max makes her Chicago debut with a set of improvised, modified violin. After a decade of composing and performing conventional classical works, MAX began to experiment with the limitations of her instrument, developing new sounds and techniques through the use of delay, distortion and loops - the results are quite compelling. A new Table of the Elements disc, This Silver String, was just released. ( Time Out )
