CARAMEL JACK get the headline slot they deserve based (for starters) on their stunning recent album, 1900. Reviewers have described it as “headspinning” and “bewildering”, and it’s clear that the band felt they had to surpass even the diversity of the acclaimed “Songs From Low Story”. Comparisons seem almost futile, but influences range from early REM to TOM WAITS in full-on vaudeville mode, from a uber-eclectic THE BLUE NILE to THE TRIFFIDS at their embittered, heartbreaking best.
Main support for this evening comes from PAUL HANDYSIDE. Regular listeners to the Gilded Palace radio show will have heard some songs from Paul’s most recent album 2007’s “Futures Dream”; if you haven’t, you are missing out on epic piano-led balladry to rank with the best. Even being familiar with the quality of Paul’s work with previous bands (Hurrah! and Bronze) we were knocked sideways when we first heard it. Hopeful, celebratory, the songs sound like hymns for the dispossessed, national anthems for countries yet to be born.
Opener JOE KIRBY until recently performed under the name JOEL MARSHALL. Don’t check that on myspace (you just did, didn’t you…?) That’s not him… this is him:http://www.healthyconcerts.com/artists/Joel_Edwards/ Very promising, lyrically-sussed, nice tunes, we’d get in early if we were you. Joe’s on stage at 8:00pm
