Hey, a bit late maybe with a shout, but like everyone else, PL dissappointed. They were third on my list anyway, but i expected a lot more from them. I guess 20yrs is starting to show!!!. MDB absolutely stole the show, and thats a bold statement for me, being a die hard Anathema fan. I also feel that 7.30 start time for any gig is too early anyway. Venue wise,....shit its slow getting in there! Why does it take so long??? But at the end of the day, it was a landmark gig, 3 of doom metals creators in one show, how bad!

@Ataroth Hehehe, yeah it was not easy to stand it, but remember that "good things come for those who wait" ;)

Made me wish I'd have endured Paradise Losts set now. Ah well.

all the musicians and roadies got onstage, lots of hugging going on and the audience was sprayed with champagne. so were some people on stage as well ;-) i took a nice pic of hamish showering greg mac in champagne. sadly cant post it on here

What actually happened at the end with all three of them as I left half way during PL?

sadly i got too late for anathema, but i'll see them soon as headliners :P MDB was awesome. PL was much crappier than last time I saw them, about 5 years ago. I was about to leave the venue in the middle of PL concert but i stayed cos I was going to meet some friends at the end of the gig. Actually I enjoyed to see the three bands together on the stage at the end of the concert... Three great bands, but it seems one of them needs some viagra ;)

well, i know who the drummer was (mark heron from oceansize) but an official introduction would have been nice, even if he was "just" the session drummer. interesting drumkit setup btw 8-|

mopsgesicht: I've been pretty impressed with the sound in general over the last few years - it's much cleaner than when I started going to gigs 20 years ago, and I have less problems with tinnitus these days too. I had Elacin earplugs ready for this gig, but didn't need them. I don't recall hearing anything about the drummer from Nick; perhaps the drummer's just a session musician brought in for the tour? As an aside, during PL's set it was a bit distracting to see people moving around in the background whilst they were playing. I'm not sure if there were technical problems, or just PL's music needed a bit more fiddling in order to be able to achieve their sound...

  • mopsgesicht

@cowbutt: thanks for the info - thought the sound might have been better further back. did anybody hear nick introduce the new drummer? i didn't and i thought it was a bit odd not to say anything at all to the audience about him.

I came from Barcelona just to see these three amazing bands...my origins... Wonderful Anathema and MDB (of course!) but I am sorry for PL... horrible show ( just one hour and a few minutes??) and sound (I can let them my computer if they need one...what happened?) ... just like six months ago here in Catalonia, it was like a pop-star show. Anyway, I hope to celebrate twenty more years with them.

mopsgesicht: I was in the balcony and the sound was pretty good all round - best of all for MDB, which is surprising given the density of their music. PL's setlist was almost all from 'Draconian Times' and 'In Requiem' and completely ignored their controversial 'Host' (which they claim to like, especially live, and I like too) and 'Believe in Nothing' (which I like, even if they think it's a "massive compromise").

i was there for paradise lost. i was in the first row and i thought the sound was terrible for all 3 bands. maybe it was better a little further back? anyway, PL did dissapoint even me - a longtime fan. the setlist was very imbalanced (to put it nicely).....

I definatly went for My Dying Bride out of the three bands playing and were highly suprised at how good Anathema were to. But I have to agree with all others Paradise Lost were terrible as I expected them to be.

"Jesus, why did you even go if not to honour Paradise Lost's legacy?" - Like a lot of other people I'd imagine - to see My Dying Bride and Anathema. I also left during Paradise Lost, because as usual their performance was poor. When the band itself doesn't respect it's own legacy, how can they expect the fans to? I'd had enough by the time they butchered "Gothic".

Moccles, it may shock you to know that not everyone went to see Paradise Lost. I also left half way through their set, they're very bland live, especially by comparison to My Dying Bride and Anathema.

  • neojezebel

Moccles, Cowbutt is right. PL were a great band in their time, but they were completely overshadowed by the other 2 bands who were amazing (and who I much prefer). They've lost their mojo & I didn't want to sully my memories of them with the mediocre performance they put on that night.

    September 2008
  • cowbutt

Moccles: I happily stayed for the whole gig, but gigs aren't some kind of sacrament, you know? They're supposed to be FUN! And if I'm not having fun at a gig, I'll leave, 20th anniversary or not. Remember who's paying who to be there!

    September 2008
  • Moccles

Jesus, why did you even go if not to honour Paradise Lost's legacy? It's a shame how people can be so disrespectful to leave midway through a 20th anniversary gig.

Couldn't be bothered with PL after a few songs. Does anyone have the setlist? Would be interesting to see what they played. MDB wiped the floor with them imho.

Darn PL it seems. Why do they have such a following then?

  • Century_Skunk

Anathema were great, MDB were fecking awesome - finally to hear them play some of the old stuff again with the violin - excellent! All Paradise Lost did was cement my opinion that they are a lifeless load of old shit when playing live. That's the 4th time I've seen them and once again they were terrible. They make the decent older songs sound so cheesy and flat too.

  • RooOfDoom

Shame about the sound for Paradise Lost, oh well My Dying Bride owned them anyway :~)

  • BeatySwollocks

I tried to get into Paradise Lost, but between the fat middle-aged men practically climbing up me to get closer to the front and the not so good sound, they didn't compare to Anathema and My Dying Bride. Not by a long shot.

  • SilverInBlood

I am more familiar with the opening acts, but I generally enjoyed Paradise Lost.

    September 2008
  • Ataroth

I left pretty much after a couple of Paradise Lost songs had to get bus back to Birmingham. Wanted MDB to play a few newer songs though at least plus their sound at the start of the night was quite off. Still I did really enjoy them though they weren't half as good as they were at Bloodstock Indoor 2006.

  • itsnotfun

Doesn't look like anyone enjoyed Paradise Lost, I left after their first song.

wonderful... my dying bride old stuff...left after my dying bride though, not into paradise lost really, in fact, i stopped listening to them after the "icon"... on the way met Vincent Cavanagh, hugged him, told him thanks...

Anathema wasn't really my cup of tea, but it was fantastic to finally see My Dying Bride, one of my favourite bands! They put on a great performance. I was thoroughly underwhelmed by Paradise Lost - their sound was truly insipid, and samey. Frankly they were absolutely boring. I haven't really listened to them in about ten years, and now I am glad I didn't bother keeping up with them. It's a mystery why their bland and uninspired goth tinged rock seemed to have such a rabid following in the audience.

I did indeed read them wrong! It was a great night.. Left 3/4 through Paradise lost, I really don't understand the big deal with them tbh.. I heard a few people on the way back saying to each other "Paradise lost were shit!" :|lol

Don't worry, think you misread the times, hope you did, it means they come on at 19:00, and end at 20:00, so a full hour set, same for MDB.

ANATHEMA GET 20MINS?!!!?!? I thought this was the unholy trinity not lets all support Paradise lost and not even get 45mins
