digitaljim and I arrived at this gig just as Free Blood took to the stage. I was quietly pleased that we'd missed Damn Shames as I've seen them enough times and...I don't find them that brilliant. Anyways, Free Blood were an interesting pair. Being the short arse that I am and near the bar, I couldn't see much of what was happening on stage. This is probably a good thing, as musically Free Blood had some amazing ideas and most of their songs were interesting, pretty banging and really catchy. From a visual point of view, they were disappointing. Mainly due to the lack of live band. It was like we were watching some really poncy kids doing kareoke. Of course, I've nothing against kareoke, but I don't really have time for bands getting up on stage and singing along to backing tracks. Sequenced tracks. Whatever, I want musicians damnit.
So. Musically = awesome; visually = complete let down.
I'd been looking forward to seeing Holy Fuck live as I love "LP". I've not managed to get my hands on their self titled effort or their EP, but I believe that "LP" is an extended version of the "EP". Still, that didn't matter because no matter what track they went into I found it hard to resist bopping about in the small space I had to myself! They rattled through "Super Inuit", "The Pulse", "Frenchy's" (a personal favourite) and many others. What I did manage to see of them on stage, they were brilliant; thoroughly enjoying themselves, bursting with energy and the guys in front were twiddling with knobs and produced a variety of instruments over the duration of the set that were perhaps unexpected. As far as I could tell, there was only one slip up when they launched back into a sequence but a semi-tone too high. There's nothing better than an error in a set...Makes it all seem real.
