This program turns a lens on music that explores the impact that rivers have on human life and the inspiration water has provided to many composers and musicians. The program emerges from a set of works by John Cage inspired by the sounds of water, through Toru Takemitsu’s poetic Rain Coming, to the world premiere of American composer John Luther Adams’ Become River. The program culminates in Aaron Copland’s iconic ballet Appalachian Spring.
