Nublu 10 Years
w/ performances by Wax Poetic, Hess is More, Love Trio and Clark Gayton
The East Village music club Nublu is celebrating 10 years of showcasing some of the most diverse and exciting musical styles from around the world! A typical week at Nublu is a smorgasbord of musical styles, from the long-running Wednesday night Forro dance party to late night jazz jam sessions with some of the best session players working today. Acclaimed Djs from around the world have always made Nublu a stop on their NYC itinerary, spinning everything from Turkish disco to House Music to Brazilian forro. Musician/owner Ilhan Ersahin, a skilled keyboardist/sax player who himself embodies the cultural mix of heritage and musical roots that Nublu is known for, opened the club’s doors in the hopes of nurturing talent and offering a place where he and music friends could jam and create their unique sounds, and ten years later the music keeps flowing! As the New York Times stated, “it’s what happens onstage that has made Nublu’s reputation as an incubator of musical talent, with some of the most adventurous and varied offerings in the city.”
WAX POETIC: the influential NYC rock/pop ensemble helmed by noted keyboardist Ilhan Ersahin and born in early days of Nublu have been performing and recording worldwide with an array of rotating international stars, from Norah Jones to Bebel Gilberto to N’Dea Davenport. They have also crafted several global chapters to their musical story, including Wax Poetic Copenhagen, Wax Poetic Istanbul and Wax Poetic Brasil. The newest incarnation of the group, features newcomer vocalist Sissy Clemens on vocals and noted singer/songwriter/guitarist Gabriel Gordon-their new album called ON A RIDE comes out Sept. 4 on Nublu Records.
HESS IS MORE: The art/pop project is a creation of Denmark's Mikkel Hess, a composer and multi-instrumentalist who combines elements of jazz, electronica, Scandinavian folk, soundtrack music, and classic pop with a playfully melodic and decidedly humorous sensibility.
SABINA SCIUBBA: Multitalented singer/songwriter Sabina Sciubba is most known as the lead singer of the Brazilian Girls. Sabina has been quietly working on her own music and will be doing a special solo show performing her new songs with only her voice and electric guitar.
LOVE TRIO: One of the earliest bands coming out of the Nublu scene, the power trio fetaures Ilhan Ersahin on keyboard and saxophone, Kenny Wollesen (John Zorn, BIll Frisell) on drums and Jesse Murphy (Brazilian Girls) on bass. They blend sounds of electronic, dance, jazz and dub.
CLARK GAYTON: One of the most in-demand trombone and tuba players in New York, Gayton has shared the stage with bands like the Skatalites, Sting, Levon Helm, and many more. He's fresh off a long tour with Bruce Springsteen and will bring his New Orleans/reggae/ska/funk band to top off the night.
Top class Nublu resident DJs also join the bill to spin between sets: Greg Caz, Modest P, Alex from Tokyo, Vladimir Radojicic
