Squeeze playing honky-tonk? Take a listen to 'Melody Motel' - that's the song that drove me out in the end. Off their album 'Frank'. Never heard of it? Exactly...

To demonstrate how subjective these things are, here's a different perspective on the same gig. The Beat were great. I agree with previous comments that the ska was dialed down. A Northern Soul, Style Council-ish vibe crept in at times. But the crowd was up for it. There were a lot of people dancing, including yours truly. The ska was dialed down, but the fun was dialed up. In contrast, I thought Squeeze were disappointing. Their set was front-loaded with obscure album tracks and the crowd went flat: no dancing; a drift back to the bar; lots of talking & fiddling with phones. I got bored. Squeeze know what the majority of their audience want to hear, witness the songs they re-recorded for 'Spot The Difference'. It doesn't include stuff like 'Bang Bang' and 'Model' off their dodgy first album. I walked out when they started playing honky-tonk. 'Cool For Cats' struck up as I left and I know it was wall-to-wall 'hits' after that. Maybe I left at the wrong time? But they'd lost me by then

Squeeze put on a great show. They have a deep catalog. Every song a radio hit. I had a great time. Wordmanswl is right about the sound though. I was up front, about 10 feet from the stage. And the sound was horrible for Squeeze. I bailed out after the 5th song. Totally killed the sound on my video. I'll upload the one song that came out decent (behind soundguy) on YouTube. English Beat are always fun. Those videos are pretty good (little too much bass). I uploaded one song and more to come. :) Last year at Irving Plaza they had one more guitarist. So this might be the cause of the lacking ska factor.

Squeeze were great, considering the venue, the English Beat, I don't know, this is my second time seeing the Dave Wakeling and friends lineup and something is just missing. He is still in good voice, but the ska factor is just not there. You have to know where to stand in this general admission arena, or else the sound is deplorable. Squeeze was fantastic, I actually stood by the soundboard which gave me the sound I was looking for. Difford and Tillbrook still know how to put on a show, played all the crowd pleasers and did give a decent set. I think the English Beat american touring version and the Beat british touring version need to merge and take the show back on the road and put the ska back into their performance.
