A few things about The Longcut: there are three of them, they formed at university in Manchester, they’ve played shows throughout Europe, they’ve sold thousands of records, Toro Y Moi, Gallops and Earlies have remixed them and, most importantly, they’re back.
One of the greatest live acts to come out of the UK this millennium, early shows were often house parties, with Stuart Oglivie alternating between his roles on drums and vocals, and were electric enough to convince Deltasonic to put out A Call and Response. A move to Melodic Records saw them follow up one of the most memorable debuts of the decade with Open Hearts and the subsequent remix EP, Broken Hearts. Their sound has always been one that defies translation into words, lolling over boundaries between noise and pop, seeping into the electronic spectrum and going further than all the post-genres you’d care to mention. A new record is expected in early 2012, and it’s going to be thrilling to see where they go next.
