FREEHOLD — Following in the footprints made by a series of concerts that have been held in downtown Freehold Borough over the past few years, a new concert series dubbed Live From Freehold will offer people a chance to hear noted musicians in various venues.
Downtown Freehold, an organization that promotes business and tourism efforts in the borough, will host its first Live From Freehold concert on Jan. 22 at 3 p.m. at the Freehold Jewish Center, 59 Broad St. The concert will feature Alejandro Escovedo, a singersongwriter from San Antonio, Texas.
Escovedo is familiar with Freehold, having previously performed at the Concerts in the Studio series that were hosted by borough residents Mark and Elaine Costanzo.
The intimate concerts hosted by the Costanzos at their home over the past six years proved so successful that the couple wanted to bring performers to a larger audience. Live From Freehold is the result of that idea .
Mark Costanzo said Escovedo is “quite incredible” and played three times to sold-out audiences at the Concerts in the Studios series.
“His music is eclectic and ranges from really hard rock to ballads, and he does all genres well,” Costanzo said.
Escovedo’s biography, written by guitarist Lenny Kaye, states that Escovedo is “one with his muse and his music.”
Kaye said Escovedo “spent a lifetime traversing the bridge between words and melody,” and that he has “ranged over an emotional depth that embraces all forms of genre and presentation.”
Escovedo was raised in a musical family and has performed from Austin, Texas, to California and New York and back to Austin. He had a solo career in the 1970s, was a guitarist for the punk rock group the Nuns in the 1980s, and explored Americana music and released a solo album, “Gravity,” in the 1990s.
Kaye wrote that Escovedo’s rise to fame has been “a steady incline” and that during that ride he has “deepened and burnished his music, made it closer to the bone, which begins to break, deepening his insight and his ability to find that insight in performance.”
Tickets for Escovedo’s Jan. 22 performance in Freehold Borough are $30 in advance and $35 at the door. For more information, visit http://www.livefromfreehold.us.
