Röyksopp
8:30-9:30 - Strange Talk

Proudly presented by Big Day Out.
BIG DAY OUT 2012 is where the wild things are - specifically the two-headed Norwegian monster that rules the realm of electronic music: Röyksopp.
“Röyksopp are architects of an all-encompassing audiovisual experience … a balanced sonic constellation of bliss perhaps only achieved by travelling through Berge’s fjords on a sunny Norwegian day.” (Urb, March 2011)
For more than a dozen years now, Svein Berge and Torbjörn Brundtland have been dreaming up ever more exciting experiments in electronica and ever more elaborate live performances. Making their very first visit to Australia for BIG DAY OUT 2012, Röyksopp’s four albums -Melody A.M., The Understanding, Junior and 2010’s critically acclaimed, instrumental Senior have produced earworms as infectious and instantly recognisable as Eple, What Else is There?, Only This Moment, Forsaken Cowboy (which screened at the British Film Institute) and The Girl and the Robot.
Grammy nominated, Robyn collaborators, in-demand remixers of everyone from Lady Gaga to Kings of Leon, Peter Gabriel, Felix da Housecat and Coldplay, Berge and Brundtland have spent plenty of time in 2011 working on new music: “When you least expect it, we show up like two happy little gnomes,” they teased on royksopp.com. “Bearing gifts. Gifts in the form of music … we assure you: new material is being brewed.”
Some of that new material, including new tune Shores of Easy, will have its first outing anywhere at BIG DAY OUT this summer. What will it sound like? And how will they present it on stage? “The ability to experiment and explore is what drives us further,” Berge recently told Dazed Digital. “In what direction, is uncertain … But it has taken us to places of strange beauty and disturbing darkness.”
From body armour to space helmets, chill-out to floor-fillers, theirs is a state where anything is possible.
“They seem unable to decide what kind of band they are: dance, electro-funk, pop, chillwave or some kind of techno-classical orchestra. But - if you already knew the 21st century oddity that is Röyksopp, you probably danced your ass off. A rush of adrenaline … Scandinavia scores again.” (1001 Nights in the City, March 2011)
