Sunderland’s Stadium of Light is set to rock to the sounds of one of the world’s most successful rock bands as the home of Sunderland Football Club gets set to welcome Red Hot Chili Peppers next summer.
The US band will play two massive shows in the UK next year - Sunderland’s Stadium of Light and Knebworth, which will be their only UK dates in 2012.

The Stadium of Light gig will also be the bands first-ever major show in the North East of England, with their only previous appearance being at the 400 capacity Newcastle Riverside in 1990.
One of the most successful acts in rock history, Red Hot Chili Peppers have sold more than 60 million albums, including 5 multi-platinum LP’s and won six Grammy Awards.
The show will take place at Sunderland’s Stadium of Light on Sunday 24 June 2012 and tickets go on sale from 9am, Friday 4 November, 2011 (see below for full details).
Special guests joining Red Hot Chili Peppers will be announced in due course.
Sunderland AFC’s chief executive Margaret Byrne said: “This is a fantastic coup for the club and the city and we are delighted to welcome another act of such immense stature in the music world to our stadium.
“The Stadium of Light is now firmly established as a major player on the concert circuit, which is further cemented by the fact that we are one of only two venues that Red Hot Chili Peppers will be playing in the UK next year.”Red Hot Chili Peppers

Brilliant gig, wasn't really interested in the support acts though. First time seeing the Chilis live, will not be the last!

Ireland has Noel Gallagher because the ticket sales weren't going very well and he was free on that day. I think this date would have had similar treatment if they could find anyone, but they couldn't so they went for the slightly successful local band so everyone will go and "support the lads". I'm just more upset that when they played Hyde Park they had James fucking Brown supporting, and instead we get such icons as the Wombats.

Why are the support bands so indie? I don't mind The Wombats and it's nice for local lads Futureheads to play SoL but Reverend and The Makers? No one gives a shit about them anymore. Surely there are more appropriate bands out there.

I like the Futureheads, but I wouldn't say they're a great main support.

God knows why it says Sunderland, 'newcastle' in the address.

I'm thinking there is gonna be a big main support, if ticket sales are still as poor as rumoured. That's why they had to get Dizzee Rascal and Noel Gallagher for the other dates. Something like Rage Against the Machine, mmmmmmmmmmm
