    Sat 23 Jun – Jarvis Cocker's Meltdown

    Last night I went to the Lost Ladies of folk night which was part of Jarvis' Meltdown festival. We arrived a little late (the gig started at exactly the time it said on the ticket and we got caught in a thuderstorm). We walked in on Cate le Bon who was just lovely - and that's not just the white stilettos/black opaque tights combo. Melodic Welsh folk not too dissimilar to the vein of Gruff Rhys on Candylion. I'm sad we only caught three of her songs, I'd certainly like to hear more. Next up was Jane Weaver, who despite her experience (after a bit of googling) was very disappointing. Just mediocre singer-songwriter stuff played over two chords. She was to shine later...

    Then it was onto the 'lost ladies', with The High Llamas as a backing group. First up, Susan Christie. 'I should be at the supermarket squeezing tomatoes, I shouldn't be here!'. With the air of a school headmistress she was humbled and overwhelmed, with some great historical banter between songs. …
