• Kauniita Unia about Sonata Arctica!

    26 Nov 2007, 08:40 by Azunaii

Sun 25 Nov – Sonata Arctica, Epica, Ride the SkyWell while yesterday's wakeup song was PlayJust Like You by Three Days Grace, today's was obviously a mix of a lot of Sonata Arctica songs! Because my god that was one awesome gig! The trip there, the support acts, and of course Sonata itself, everything was just doused in total sweetness =D

We arrived at the venue at about 16.30. And bam, there was this big line already. Apparently people had been waiting there since 12.30, in the rain and all! Props to them ^^ We went for a bite at the snackbar a couple of blocks away first, once there we saw lots of ppl in Sonata shirts, a funny sight really.

Then we went back to the venue. The line had grown about twice the size now, but luckily once the doors opened things went pretty fast. We got a good spot somewhere near the stage, left of center. After taking pictures of an empty stage, looking at the people around us and a wait that seemed to take forever, Ride the Sky started playing.

Well, I gotta hand it to em, they're not all that bad really =) I thought the music was pretty good! It's just that they radiate this feeling of 'We're old' in their act. The limited bodily motion of the lead singer and the way the drummer tossed his stick up but then didn't manage to catch it just had this big "We're too old for live act" stamp on it. In my opinion that is. They did have a pretty solid sound though, so all in all not bad. A nice touch was Sonata coming halfway through their act and tossing cookies(?) in the crowd! Also the way they got up on the staircase and clapped in measure to Smile From Heaven's Eye showed some real support to their support act (as does Tony wearing an Epica hoodie). Nice to see Sonata doesn't treat them as some inferior act.

Then after another loong wait (or at least it seemed so) Epica started playing. I had my thoughts about them and didn't expect much of them. I knew the guitarist was a grunter and I just don't like grunting. It wasn't as bad as I had expected though, so that was good. The audience really had a nice time judging by all the headbanging, so I guess they did a good job. It's just not really my cup of tea I guess. Good stuff nonetheless =D

The third wait really seemed to take forever. The suspense when the stage aid flashed his lil light towards the tech area, signalling the start, was just killing! Then when they came on everything just went nuts. Had I been casually nodding along on RtS and Epica, on the first notes of In Black And White I just went ballistic. Been jumping, singing, headbanging, everything like a madman! For all the toes I stept on, I'm sorry ^^

The setlist was absolute win. Highlights were Tallulah, with the entire crowd singing along. I had tears in my eyes, no lie! It's such a wondrous song after all. Equally sweet was Black Sheep, Tony replacing the first 2 lines of the song by "We're not Iron Maiden, we're not from England. We are Sonata and we come from Finland!", and referring to Elias on the line "Temple of the Evil" (Elias' nickname being E.Vil).
The encore was awesome, with Tony using the audience as drumkit. It worked surprisingly well! =D
And of course The Cage with the obligatory Vodka afterwards!
My ex-gf, who I went to the concert with, was even lucky enough to catch Henkka's towel [insert mild jealousy here] !

I could ramble about each song but it's faster to just say everything about the show was bloody amazing! I took lots of pictures, got a hoodie and shirt afterwards (really lucky, last one on both!) and we went home tired, but absolutely satisfied!

Until next time, Sonata! Kauniita Unia!

Sun 25 Nov – Sonata Arctica, Epica, Ride the Sky

First of all, I'd like to extend an apology to my supposed-to-be concert mates (those involved will know who I am talking about) I totally failed to meet at the train station. I'm truly sorry I didn't meet you: I tried to call both of you, but... :/ Hope you guys had fun, I know I did and I wish I'd been there with you but please answer my call s next time okay?

I'd been bouncing about all day for this gig. Sonata is one of my favourite bands in the history of my music addiction and it was great to finally get the opportunity to see them live (in a great hall, I must admit.)

The best thing about 013 is the stairs system. Of course there is a floor right in front of the stage, but you don't have to enter a silly pit to see everything: from halfway the stairs I had an excellent view of what was going on. (I'm tall, which helps too.)

Another good thing was the bands not being ass with time-schedules. Ride The Sky started at 19:10, which was fair enough, and Epica hit the stage at 20:00-ish.
Sonata was around 9:30 pm (slightly earlier as I recall but hey. When I'm at a gig, I don't constantly check my watch.)

Ride The Sky was a decent enough band as a choice to open. I don't know their set (I will be posting the other two as memory permits), but they played a song called New Protection, and also something called The Prince of Darkness. The singer was a total geek, but the crowd seemed to like them. Take them or leave them, their performance wasn't too bad, but I like only one supporting band better unless the other band is really of added value (unlike Epica, these guys weren't.) It was also really funny when four members of Sonata (including Tony) came on during the band's set halfway and started throwing out candy. It was bloody hilarious. The crowd was probably more excited for that than for Ride The Sky.

I'm a dimwit. Thanks RockingPingIng for the RTS set:

    Black Cloud
    Far beyond the Stars
    New Protection
    Silent War
    Smile of Heaven's Eye
    Prince of Darkness
    Endless

Epica fared better with the audience (and me as well, but Mark needs to stop the awful screaming. Let Simone fucking sing, will you?) They got a great crowd reaction, and since the band is Dutch there is no need to resort to English in the live set, which is always a nice treat. Simone is awesome live: that woman does a windmill like a man. The sound was great: the only complaints during this set (and the other two) is that the keyboards were a bit low in the mix.

    Epica's setlist:

    Intro: Indigo - Prologue
    The Obsessive Devotion
    Sensorium
    Menace of Vanity
    Fools of Damnation
Cry for the Moon (these two I can't remember the order of)
    Sancta Terra
    Consign to Oblivion

Covers their work nicely in my opinion, putting emphasis on the new disc which is just the best of the three as well. I liked the performances of Obsessive Devotion and Sancta Terra especially. They were loud, though!

After these two very agreeable openers, it was time for our good Finnish friends from Kemi, the superb Sonata Arctica. If you want to imagine an SA gig, put it like this: it's like a one-and-a-half our singalong gig. EVERY song has a chorus people can sing, so Tony just lets us get on with it (singing the melodies to Victoria's Secret and San Sebastian).

Tony is one charming Finnish dude, as well. Constantly making jokes, a true clown (or a wannabe puppet? Time will tell) and an active engager of the crowd: he was animated and the crowd was animated by him. The best part was of course just after the encore break: Tony did his drum game and it was bloody hilarious. Tony divided us into three parts and made us imitate a snare, a hi-hat and a bass drum. Pity I got hi-hat because our tempo was such ass, haha. Tony shook his head at us as well. Said he would be back. Apparently Tony has seen Schwarzenegger movies, too.

Another hilarious moment was Tony taking Elias's pick during Don't Say A Word and playing a solo for him (complete with wah pedal). Elias did the fretwork and Tony bashed the strings. Tony also air keytared during some of Henrik's solos.

Highlight song performances were the completely mindblowing rendition of "Caleb", FullMoon, Don't Say a Word, Black Sheep and of course My Land. Tallulah is such a silly song (I'd preferred Replica or Shamandalie), but it's fun to sing along to.

    Sonata's setlist:

Intro (whatever the hell it was)
    In Black and White
    Paid in Full
    Victoria's Secret
    Broken
    8th Commandment
    Tallulah
    Full Moon
    Caleb
    Black Sheep
    It Won't Fade
Gravenimage (bleh, pick a better song Tony. Like Replica, which you missed.)
    San Sebastian
    -------
    ENCORE
Tony's Drum Clinic, Part 35 (I am quoting Tony on this!)leading into We Will Rock You (Yes, for the ignorant, that is a Queen cover.)
    My Land
    Don't Say a Word
    The Cage
    Vodka

Final notes: We need some vodka...and a terrific hug from Tony.
