DON’t MOVE!

Don’t Move! began life in a teenaged Mason Le Long’s back room when, introduced to him by a mutual friend, Joe Carvell came round armed with his bass, an eighth and a DVD of Team America. Many late-night jams, stoned wig-outs to Love, Can and Ahmad Jamal, and a Spinal Tap-esque string of non-committal drummers later they found Matt Rheeston drumming in a grimy venue above a bar in Birmingham’s hip Moseley Village. With the impending release of their debut album, ‘The New Pop Sound of Don’t Move!’ they poached Rheeston and recruited pre-war punk accordionist-of-the-apocolypse, Cederick Confuegos to complete the line-up.

“Absolute genius, I urge you to go and see them live.” - Tom Robinson, BBC 6music

“If the Yardbirds had been one of those shambling 1980s Glasgow bands that Franz Ferdinand worshipped, fronted by John Lennon’s better-read little brother, they’d have sounded like this.” - The Times****

THE CRIBBLER

Out of a fantasy forest filled with tall towers comes crawling The Cribbler. With titles like ‘Oesti the Iceman’, ‘The Mirror’ and ‘I am the Weather’, his songs share with The Incredible String Band a mystical, whimsical and transcendental nature.

His lyrical content dances around from the surreal and absurd to the prosaic to simply stating how it is. A deft, technical, finger-picking style reveals his heroes as John Renbourne, and Bert Jansch, and there’s a touch of Syd Barrett in his child-like absurdity, revealed in a song where sausages act as ‘Mother’s Medicine’ for a mardy child.

‘I Wish I Was Ueshiba (in Blackpool)’ is an unrequited love song that turns nasty on Blackpool Beach with the entrance of a bunch of knife wielding thugs. Throughout the song there is swishing refrain/mantra that name checks The Cribbler’s hero, Morehi Ueshiba, the developer of Aikido. In the song ‘Drinking For A Day’ there’s humour, tinged with sadness and desperation.

Emotionally complex, literary-heavy craftings make The Cribbler a refreshing change from happy-clappy folk-pop offerings. His debut album ‘Weirder Longer’ will be release on Bohemian Jukebox on 5th September. Hopefully on a pair of chopsticks…

RICHARD BURKE

Raised on the rock and indie of the American underground, Rich turned his hand to acoustic folk in his mid-twenties after being inspired by the likes of Elliott Smith, Nick Drake and the lush melodies of Teenage Fanclub. He released two albums on the well-respected Bearos label and is about to release his third album: ‘An Ocean Full of Broken Stars’. His unique playing style and startling covers of the likes of Shellac and Yazoo, makes Richard Burke a true delight for those seeking something different and new.
