DUCKTAILS
Ducktails is the solo side project of Matthew Mondanile, a member of Ridgewood, NJ-based indie beach bums Real Estate. While not too dissimilar in tone from the sun-kissed pop of his main squeeze, Mondanile’s work as Ducktails presents a more fragmented, mercurial version of the Garden State of mind. More synthetic, too, than Real Estate, Ducktails is all burbling analog synths, bedroom processing, and sunburnt soundscapes. The end effect acts as a sort of bleary aural Polaroid taken at a backyard party Real Estate just finished playing. Mondanile’s output under the Ducktails moniker has been prolific and perhaps a tad illusory; he has released numerous ultra-rare cassettes and CD-Rs, a pair of 7”s, and a pair of “official” LPs (a self-titled album on Not Not Fun and Landscapes on Olde English Spelling Bee, both in 2009). In addition to playing in several other projects, including Predator Vision and The Parasails, Mondanile released a split with DRACULA LEWIS in 2010, before releasing Ducktails III: Arcade Dynamics, in 2011. The album took a more bare-bones approach, and marked a notable change in style for Ducktails.
JULIAN LYNCH
While earning his Ph.D. in ethnomusicology at the University of Wisconsin-Madison – following a stint working for Smithsonian Folkways Recordings – Ridgewood, NJ native Julian Lynch started recording lo-fi bedroom pop songs on his four-track. Between 2008 and 2010, he released two 7” records (Droplet on a Hot Stone and a Ducktails split), two CD-Rs (Garden Is Adventure and Born2Run), and two LPs (Orange You Glad and the Pitchfork ‘Best New Music’-acclaimed Mare). Now, Lynch is readying a new long-player once again for consumption as the weather gets warmer: Terra will see release on Underwater Peoples this spring.
BIG TROUBLES
Big Troubles, hailing from the same heralded hyper-chic suburb of Ridgewood, NJ, is the project of songwriters Ian Drennan and Alex Craig, with Samuel Franklin and Luka Usmiani on non-guitars. Each songwriter has his own respective style; Craig excels in crafting fuzzy pop songs, while Drennan shines in soft yet bludgeoning, lo-fi abrasive tones. Both music dweebs, their charm lies at once in their differences and in their cosmic musical twinhood. Often, they lie in bed together spooning, talking about stuff in the dark. Mid-sentence, one of them puts two fingers on the other’s lips and coos, “Don’t speak: I know just what you’re saying.” They released their debut full length, Worry, on Olde English Spelling Bee in 2010. Big Troubles also have the best band website on the internet.
