Christine Ohlman and Tejas Singh
The SNL band’s Beehive Queen takes the stage for a night of incendiary blues-and soul-tinged music.
Christine Ohlman, the “Beehive Queen,” and her band Rebel Montez take the stage for a night of incendiary blues- and soul-tinged music driven by a voice that, said one critic, “is out to rearrange your furniture.” Ohlman is the current and long-time vocalist with the Saturday Night Live Band.
Ohlman has appeared with the likes of Neil Young, George Harrison and Al Green. She performed at Bob Dylan’s 30th Anniversary bash at The Garden, the Central Park Summerstage Tribute To Janis Joplin (where she fronted both Big Brother & The Holding Company and the Kozmic Blues Band) and the legendary 2008 tribute to Bill Withers at Celebrate Brooklyn, where Withers himself got on stage for the first time in three decades. She appears on the Grammy nominated albums A Tribute To Howlin’ Wolf (with Taj Mahal and Lucinda Williams) and Charlie Musselwhite’s One Night In America. She sang the theme song for NBC’s 30 Rock and duets live whenever possible with blues legends Eddie Kirkland and Hubert Sumlin, has collaborated with Marshall Crenshaw, Big Al Anderson and Ian Hunter—all the while continuing to torch clubs up and down the Eastern Seaboard with her band Rebel Montez.
The Deep End , her first album of original material in five years, features duets with Hunter, Crenshaw, Dion DiMucci and Levon Helm among others. “I’ve come here tonight to set your souls on fire,” she’ll tell an audience. And she will.
The India-born, DC raised rising star singer songwriter Tejas Singh’s EP A Brief History is full of up-tempo bluegrass beats and a lyrical overtone that is socially and politically conscious.
