JIM MORAY

“A compelling landmark in contemporary folk” THE INDEPENDENT Album Of The Week

JIM MORAY is one of the most consistently inventive musicians working in traditional folk music today.

After three ground-breaking and award-winning albums, he now finds himself at the forefront of a new folk revival in the UK, and hailed as a pivotal influence by a new generation of folk musicians while still only being in his 20s himself. His startlingly contemporary recordings of England’s traditional songs which have been described as the most significant development in folk music in the last 30 years.

Awarded the fRoots critics poll prize for best album and Mojo magazine Folk Album Of The Year, Moray assembled an all-star band including Saul Rose (Waterson:Carthy, Eliza Carthy Band) and William Bowerman (La Roux) to headline summer festivals through 2009.

He most recently broke with convention, giving his fourth album ‘In Modern History’ away on the cover of Songlines magazine before releasing a deluxe two disc version in June 2010.

“This new set shows him moving towards the mainstream, relying on his fine, distinctive voice rather than shock tactics… One of the folk scenes great originals” **** - THE GUARDIAN

“Though Folk has returned to the mainstream in recent years… Only a few try to take on the stark verities of traditional British folk songs. And Moray differs even from them by stapling such songs to modern pop forms. He’s continuing Fairport Convention’s folk-rock experiment, and ‘Low Culture’ comes even closer to success even than ‘Sweet England’… In any other context, he might be a conventional, mainstream figure, but the bottomless trove of sturdy old folk tales, and his musical imagination, spark brightly… There isn’t much lower, or better, culture than that.”
