Doom pop featuring members of this town needs guns, here’s what the others have to say…
“In the World of post-rock, Hreda manage the tricky art of being both pensive and cathartic. Their guitars have obviously had a good massage from Steve Albini and they know how to work the hypnotic angle to a tee. The slower sections of their set give the odd feeling of being underwater, while the more textured blasts are akin to being brought upwards to glide low over the ocean. No, scratch that Hreda ARE the ocean; a large, exquisite, glistening expanse that is all too easy to get carried away with.”
- Nightshift 2007
“Local boys Hreda dish out some cinematic sonic landscapes, this time featuring a cellist that thickens up the mix, but at the same time lightens the weight of the zigzagging dueling guitars. Their songs tend to whirl about like speedy snails trails with swelling flights of release.”
-Drowned in Sound
“So it’s back to the Trailer Park stage for another stint and its here we discover winner of the ‘surprise highlight of the weekend’ prize. It comes in the form of local band Hreda. Their instrumental post-rock sound, grandiose like a heavier and more intricate Explosions In The Sky augmented by the band’s very own cellist is absolutely captivating. Their distorted peaks, battling guitars and swift undulating changes of pace mean the 30-minute set flies by far too quickly. We have discovered something special in this one.”
- Drowned in Sound (Truck 10 review)
Theo - http://www.myspace.com/theo1000
“Theo, the work of one Sam Knight, is one for the math rock fans. Taut, chugging guitar loops layer up with frenetic tapping patterns that interweave in spiralling complexity before near sub-atomically precise, powerhouse drumming clatters and builds each song into juggernaut of riffs and rhythms. To achieve something like this recorded is one thing, but to see Theo perform live is quite another as each song blurs into the next and the dazzling guitar and drum acrobatics leave jaws sagging on the faces of all who bear witness to the talent on offer.(Angus Reid)”

Nitkowski - http://www.myspace.com/nitkowski
“I’m just going to throw this out there – Nitkowski are a complex band. If I was to tell you that they sounded like a darker Fugazi, somehow fused with the pioneering Italian jazz-metal of underground legends Ephel Duath, you’d probably start to understand what kind of a vibe their debut record creates. You’d be in the right ballpark, anyway. It’s dark, it’s intense, and it’s abrasive to say the very least.
Chauffeurs opens with the chaotic “The Taste and Stink Of Old Coins” – it blends complex, discordant riffwork with a drone style guitar attack – before rolling into the brilliant “Gukurahandi”, noisy, dirty guitars peppered with clean instrumental sections. It’s a dark, heavy sonic assault, tortured and feral, a testament to a genre of music that will always do its best to unnerve even those with the steeliest of demeanours.
“Two Above Zero” rocks like the atmospherics to a B-movie horror flick, while the bizarre “Scrubbers” builds up of incoherent sounds, to form a sparse, unsettling soundscape.
Standout track “Bite My Tongue And Do It For The Dogs” pulsates and sways – a distorted, discordant, ambient noisescape – it’s arguably the most structured song on Chauffeurs, and a real feat of visceral musicianship.
Nitkowski are a band that don’t slot into a scene; they pulsate and march through an audio assault that sounds akin to the notoriously complex Cave In sound, or anything by The Cancer Conspiracy. In fact, they’d probably be well at home on legendary noise label Hydrahead.
Chauffeurs is not an easy listen. It’s unsettling. In many places it’s absolutely bloody bizarre, but these moments of teeming confusion are resolved with moments of brilliance. Nitkowski are probably not best described as a band, but as purveyors of noise, and while it’s not designed for the casual listener, Chauffeurs is a compelling listen for fans of Ephel Duath, Fugazi, and early Cave In.”

“It’s nearing the end of eighth week and the Cellar is pretty boisterous, what with all those student-types finishing their work. It’s a good thing then that Nitkowski are playing; a perfect band to sum up the anarchic, chaotic mood. Nitkowksi may or may not be a serious outfit; it’s hard to discern lyrics amongst some of the caterwaul of their Fugazi-style assault, and the screaming vocal delivery. They like repetitive chords like Theo, however their speciality is to drive you into the ground, rather than float from it. It’s quite freeform, although the songs are thankfully (due to their head-bleeding volume) fairly brief. It’s made more immediate due to the lack of a bass player; there’s nothing lulling into the surface; it’s an incredibly visceral assault, culminating in heavy crescendos. I’m not sure what the student-heavy audience makes of it, although there’s some tentative moshing from a hard-core group at the front.”
