Following the success of The Kansas Sessions, Kirsty McGee’s fourth studio album, Hobopop Recordings are proud to announce that the critically acclaimed singer-songwriter’s next project will be recorded live in front of an audience in her home city of Manchester in October 2009. She will be giving a one-off show which will feature her full band, The Hobopop Collective, and several special guests from the UK music scene, including artists working in bands such as Guillemots and The Brute Chorus. The show will be a small, exclusive event with limited audience capacity, and will be recorded for release in early 2010.
Following her last appearance in the city, Manchester Revue described McGee as ‘a national treasure’, and press reaction to The Kansas Sessions certainly reflects this. The album was awarded glowing reviews in several music magazines and referred to as ‘a stunning musical masterpiece’ (Maverick ****) and ‘her best so far’ (Rock n’ Reel ****). This new release will feature songs from The Kansas Sessions as well as new arrangements of old favorites and performances of brand new material not previously released. McGee is enthusiastic yet enigmatic about what is in store for ticket holders: ‘We picked this space because it is so simple and small - it should give us a great intimate atmosphere and really allow a connection with the audience that we hope will make it onto the record. We’ll be trying out a few new ideas on the night to make the show unlike any we’ve done before and we’ve been rehearsing some new songs that are sounding great too. I can’t say any more for now, except that we’re really excited!’
McGee is clear that her new project will be something special. ‘We are all very happy about bringing it back home to Manchester,’ she says, ‘and the people we’ve been talking to about being involved are just fantastic. This will be the first recording to feature the full Hobopop Collective, and the atmosphere at the shows with these guys and the audiences over the last year has been electric. We’re very happy to be able to capture some of that magic on record at last.’
