Four acts take to the YellowBlack stage this week:

TRASH KIT are a careering skip-rope no-wave trio from London. Mixing chaos and trippy melody in equal measure, Trash Kit are as jubliant as they are focussed. Vocals tangle with each other and highly expressive drum patterns, while guitar lines make for a serious adventure into the realms of party. So far they have a CD-R recorded in various bedrooms but will be working with Upset The Rhythm on a new record shortly.

DEATHLINE is a duo from London, UK. Members Jennie (bass guitar, vocals) and Kaoru (guitar, vocals and programming) formed the group after quitting Artrocker post-punk band Electric Shocks. Deathline play a lo-fi blend of electronic backing and harsh, garage rock style overdriven instrumentation, that was labelled “rock noir” by their supporters due to its dark and atmospheric nature with elements of disco and old school rap and electro backing entering the mix, especially noticeable in their use of samples from classic Roland drum machines in their backing tracks. Jennie’s vocal style has been likened to “a punk rock Nico”, while the group’s mixture of electronic textures and beats, harsh guitar sounds, feedback and repetitive lyrics have drawn comparisons with the likes of The Fall, The Jesus and Mary Chain, LCD Soundsystem, Yeah Yeah Yeahs and The Raveonettes.

WIDOWS were conceived when Kim Reaper (words & vocals) and Francesko V. Manzi (guitar &; voice) decided to partake in a musical dalliance that would prove ultimately fatal. A small batch of roughly-hewn little numbers were consequently spawned, laid down and left in the incubator for the right conditions to one day be met. The first of these so-called conditions turned out to be none other than Lady Mariko Otake (keyboard & violin), denizen of the Japanese noisenik underground and spotted on the shadowy side of Constantine Road by M. Reaper wearing an Einsturzende Neubauten t-shirt, clutching a violin case. Not needing a second invitation, Reaper approached her directly and arranged a meeting at the White Horse the following day where he proceeded to convince her of the validity of his mission: “I dig Neubauten and you play the violin - how can we possibly lose?” From there, it was the usual chop-n-change of various personnel, quite unbefitting a group with so much at stake. This “transitional period” was to last for two and a half years (though fortunately throughout, Reaper and Manzi had kept at it like the dogs they are, producing many a scurrilous little gem to add to their still-incubating collection). Until at long last, conditions 2,3 and 4 were finally met, one after the other and in quick succession, for so it was ordained: glynne cicada - six-stringed sonic sculptor extrordinaire, Jaemi Zahra-Hall - bass conjurer, Steven P. - tribal rampage of the spartans. The melded elements of the 6 conditions has gone on to unleash a Hell Storm of aural devastation and delight, the like of which you’ve never heard before. Take heed dear stranger: Widows this way come…

GIANT PAW have been described to have Echoes of Syd Barrett and early Floyd bounce about them they play a raw psychedelic sound with a heavy edge. Known to take to the stage in terrifying monster masks they have an almighty precence and a live show not to be forgotten. Having knocked audiences around all over London in venues such as Bardens and The Buffalo Bar they finally bring their roar to YellowBlack.

Live bands play from 8pm-11pm, from 11pm we take it more club based with resident Nikolas Esselle keeping it heads down, taking the dancefloor on a four hour mission venturing through Obscure Pop, Electronica, F*%ked Up House, New and Proper Disco, Beeps & Bleeps to Tripped out Techno till 3am.

Students get 25% off all drinks. Arrive early!
