15 Ene 2012, 0:00 de airfigaroAs the years go on, it's getting more and more difficult to make these lists. I'm finding that I have less time that I can devote solely to devouring albums. Often my music listening time is occupied but other chores, leaving me only a certain percentage of concentration devoted to the music. Also with a subscription to mog.com and a free Spotify account, I have access to way more music. It used to be that I would collect MP3s from blogs, and purchased albums based of these samples. Now I can sample the entire album, and often I listen one album, enjoy it, but never take the time to really get to know it. I know, poor, cry me a river.
So... this list is composed of albums that I spent a lot of time listening to, but also have rated high on rateyoumusic.com. Coming in a little late this year, here are my favorite albums released in 2011:
1.) PJ Harvey - Let England Shake
2.) Tune-Yards - w h o k i l l
3.) Fleet Foxes - Helplessness Blues

6 Ene 2012, 23:40 de a-Me-with-a-YouA year that started out falsely disappointing, 2011 ended up in the historical records as one of the finer years for 'alternative' music in the last five years. A lot of excited and exciting debutes hit the scene, a lot of sophomore releases disappointed but that was made up for by one hell of a comeback record for my number one pick. Bring it on 2012!!
startin' off with sweet acoustics...
10. Kurt Vile - Smoke Ring for My Halo
check out this whiskey-drenched quality...
09. Middle Brother - Middle Brother
on to the bar brawl soundtrack of the year...
08. The Rural Alberta Advantage - Departing
skimming over old-timey narratives entailing a sexually charged "beast" figure...
07. Laura Marling - A Creature I Don't Know
touching on glossy pop perfection...
06. Emmy the Great - Virtue

3 Ene 2012, 3:32 de theLchord"Son, you should know that my recommendation is essentially a guarantee" - Ron Swanson
2011 was a fantastic year for music. I can tell because my top 10 list turned into a top 20. Then 25. And in it's final form, a top 30.
My favorite part of this year in music was its spread. On this list, you'll find a lot of electro-pop (DOM,Toro Y Moi, Modern Skirts), and on a similar level, a bunch of dream pop (Starfucker, Craft Spells, Memory Tapes). But 2011 also followed up a lot of what i loved a year ago- Beach Fossils, Real Estate, Male Bonding and Wavves were among the bands that set the tone for me in 2010. Joining the sound of a beach house basement was newcomer Cloud Nothings who had two solid releases, with a third expected in early 2012. And this was all pretty well rounded-out by Yuck, whose self-titled managed to become a best-of 90's indie rock.
Everything that was released in 2010 was pretty much rendered pointless once My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy arrived. …
2 Ene 2012, 21:48 de JohnySaskatunesGood year for music it seems. I had a hard time narrowing the list to twenty. Still there's plenty I didn't hear or never even heard about. Would appreciate any recommendations...
1. Old 97's - The Grand Theatre, Vol. 2
I really enjoyed the first Grand Theatre album and for some reason was expecting Volume Two would be a bit of a let down... was I wrong. It picks up right where Volume One left off and just cranks up the awesomeness. Bursting with raw energy and confidence.
2. Beastie Boys - Hot Sauce Committee Part Two
Probably my favourite Beastie Boys album of all time. They somehow manage to incorporate their many diverse influences – hip hop, punk rock, reggae, jazz - without sounding particularly eclectic. And all the while managing to tread a fine line between silliness and genius. Bonus feel-good points for Adam Yauch returning from cancer treatments to sound as cool and as sharp as ever.
3. Drive-By Truckers - Go-Go Boots
