Yes, Illusion is overrated. My first album of them was Matter + Form in early December 2005 (next to "Only Human Remains" by Fractured my first electro album ever back then and it changed everything for me in music). Still my favourite album of VNV, but followed by Futureperfect and Empires. The albums after Judgement have some really good songs, but also plenty of fillers. Haven't listened to their early stuff yet.
The first songs I heard of VNV Nation were Chrome and Lightwave. This when I was starting the high school, but I didn't had the curiosity to listen more of them untill I started the college and had mental issues (¿seriously? yeah).
I discovered VNV Nation via the electro/darkwave compilation We Came To Dance vol. 11, the song was "Honour (Memorial remix)". I count the years and realize this was EIGHTEEN YEARS AGO. So I'm feeling a bit old :P I was a HUGE fan for awhile, but started to drift away after Futureperfect. I really wasn't listening to them at all by the time Matter + Form came out. It's only been in the last couple of years that I've really started to listen to them again --
Personally, The first song I heard of VNV Nation was between Kingdom or Kathy's Song (Victoria Mix by VNV) [Apoptygma Berzerk]. I imagine most VNV Nation fans started flocking in about Matter + Form, that was their last very potent and original sounding effort
So pointless in fact it made you so angry that it was memorable! Now, the hard part would be finding other songs within Futurepop or EBM circles, you are so passionately focussed about... Liebestod was wonderful in Futureperfect; and far from pointless. Do some research into futurist ideology, then maybe your opinion might be validated! Oh, and do yourself a favour and pick up a copy of VNV Nation's Resonance, if you want romantic classical so badly
The best of the new "Resonance": SOLITARY (ᴀʟʟᴇɢʀᴏ ᴄᴏɴ sᴘɪʀɪᴛᴏ), NOVA (Lᴀʀɢᴏ), PERPETUAL (ᴀʟʟᴇɢʀᴏ ᴇsᴘʀᴇssɪᴠᴏ), SENTINEL (ᴍᴏᴅᴇʀᴀᴛᴏ sᴜsᴛᴇɴᴜᴛᴏ)... & FURTHER (ᴀɴᴅᴀɴᴛᴇ ᴀᴘᴘᴀssɪᴏɴᴀᴛᴏ). I would add Beloved (ᴀʟʟᴇɢʀᴏ ɢʀᴀᴢɪᴏsᴏ), cause it sounds absolutely stunning Live!
True that, I never really liked the original Sentinel that much but the Resonance version is really something else. On the other hand, I'm not really fond of the orchestal intepretation of Beloved while that's one of the best songs on my favorite VNV album. So who knows... I'm open to a Resonance Vol 2 though, I'd rather hear VNV do that than another Transnational.
Whatever songs are going to be on Vol. 2, we know it's going to be grand. Hell, they might even make the lesser liked songs loved by all.
-Just a fan suggestion- ...For the next volume of Music For Orchestra, Vol. 2, I would love to see: "Kingdom", "Joy", "Genesis", "Chrome", "Honour", "Rubicon" (not the Distant II version), "Carbon", "Arena", "Homeward", "Tomorrow Never Comes", "Epicentre" and/or "Darkangel" reworked :D
VNV Nation are finally back. Finally. This album is so flourished, moody yet inspired. Triumphant No Vengeance... Solitary (Allegro Con Spirito), Further (Andante Appassionato) and Sentinel (Moderato Sostenuto), my God. Stunning. My CD hasn't arrived yet, so i'll wait, but these ones and Perpetual (Allegro Espressivo), have left me enthralled and simply speechless. VNV Nation's lyrical content has always been on point and now you can hear lyrics, especially Solitary, coherently by ear.
Just dusted off my copy of Advance and Follow... I'd forgotten just how barebones the sound was, absolutely love it though, quite a difference to their current sound (which I also enjoy, for different reasons).
