"Why do I absolutely love half their songs and absolutely can't stand the other half?" They're the ultimate "Throw shit at the wall and see what sticks" band... but make a 4-album "Best of" anthology and they're as classic as they come.
It took me a surprisingly high number of listens to hear Nanobots as one cohesive thing. The singular tracks were amazing, but the songs, particularly the miniature tracks, were so out-of-left-field from each other when compared to the seamlessness of something like Fingertips. I felt like I was listening to a higher quality version of They Might Be Giants vs. McSweeney's. Now I don't know why I ever thought that. It's a thing now! Hooray!
btw, i've just found out, that Tesla is one of the best track of the album. It so cute and tragic at the same time. yeah it sounds quite boring, but after couple listenings you'll feel how it emotional
They Might Be Giants is even better live! If you want to listen to some live sessions of theirs, they recently stopped by KDHX studios and recorded a couple of songs. Check it out here at http://go.kdhx.org/theymightbegiants31513
Don't know how I feel about Nanobots. It's very much the same kind of album as Join Us was, but I'm hard-pressed to say whether it's better or worse. If anything I'm a little disappointed by how similar-sounding it is.
TMBG never ceases to amaze me when I see them live. Seeing them in Columbus this past weekend marked my 3rd time going to one of their shows and they were absolutely fantastic, as usual. Nanobots is a wonderful album... definitely one of my faves. :)
