• Bongos For Beatniks - The fourth album from The Bongolian - out May 9th 2011 (UK)

    13 Abr 2011, 19:18 de BlowUpRecords

Bongos For Beatniks sees the welcome return of The Bongolian, AKA multi-instrumentalist and Big Boss Man front man Nasser Bouzida. His fourth album under The Bongolian moniker continues the musical journey where 2007's Outer Bongolia left off, bringing us back down to Earth possibly via France circa 1967 via 2011, in a wildly eclectic rare groove fusion of Funk Soul Hammond Beat Jazz and a Sci-Fi Boogaloo. Dig it.

The first single to be taken to radio from the album 'The Riviera Affair' (Feburary 2011) was featured on BBC 6 Music Nemone's Lunchtime Loves (who interviewed Nasser before his sell-out Blow Up / HMV Next Big Thing) alongside support plays by Gideon Coe and Craig Charles at 6 Music, and proving a strong favorite with club DJ's around the UK. The track was also featured as a Sky Sports Soccer AM track of the week. The second single ‘Give It To Me (On The Left Side)’ is a furiously paced bongo-crazed Hammond happening that is already receiving radio play ahead of the album release…

Awww shucks there's nothing like the siren call of January to ruin my intentions of taking it easy for month. In January you get all sorts of best of the year lists, and people trading good things in at the record store. There's also the general malaise of January leaves me less distracted from surfing the web for obscure albums that look cool. So... here is... a list of things I've acquired so far this January.

    Laiback - Opus Dai
    Classic Industrial album

    Nifty - A Sparrow A Sparrow
    Aka NIF-D Ambient/noise

Various Artists - Toronto is the Best!
    Blocks Recording Club

    Lenin I Shumov - Lenin I Shumov
    Something to listen to...

    The Red Krayola - Introduction
The RK plays some complicated but beautiful pop music, titles album ironically.

    Daft Punk - Homework
10 years after the fact... I've recovered from daily unwelcome doses of Around the World and once again enjoying Da Funk and the tracks in between.

  • Headless in London

I just came back from this event: Fri 22 Dec – Holly Golightly, The Bongolian, Pete Molinari

I only realised I was gonna go there until one hour after the gig started. After a frantic search for the ticket, I arrived another hour later. (That’s two hours in total.)

So I think I missed The Bongolian but saw the second half of Pete Molinari’s performance. I didn’t see RNR, though. Question: were you there?

Holly Golightly was awesome. All her band wore jelly bag caps (If that’s the right word—I’m afraid I’m not sober enough to look it up properly.)

For the first hour or so, stood next to some other guy, both of us waiting for people who didn’t show up, if I got it right. Got closer to the stage later and even started to dance a little, which is very unusual for me.

Other memorable things that happened, in no particular order: Walked into the wrong venue and wondered why there was no live music. Danced only a little—I swear it, really little movements…
