During what turned out to be a 13 hour shift stocktaking at children's bookstore that I worked at during uni, I started to sing this on a tea break. The owner of the shop started laughing, but his wife gave me death stares. God, get a sense of humour, lady!
This was written in 1947 by the Country & Western guitarist and songwriter Merle Travis. It is based on his coal miner father, whose favorite saying, "Another day older and deeper in debt," became part of the chorus.
