@ david-1992. So due to the fact that someone listens to a few pop artists their opinion elsewhere has no worth or should somehow come as a surprise? JNez probably knows a LOT more than you think - and a lot more than you in general.
In my book, Slick is the best storyteller in hip-hop. On top of that, he has one of the strongest discographies - 4 amazing albums. And yes - I even love The Ruler is Back. He is also one of the few rappers who can always make me laught....I mean damn - A Love That's True (Part I) has to be one the best/funniest hip-hop songs ever made. Adults Only gets me everytime too - a song about anal? Brilliant :D
THE ORIGINATOR!!! any hip hop king worth his gold chain studied slick rick's storytelling as expressed on his incredible debut album. mona lisa, children's story, the ruler's back, and hell, the entire classic 1989 Great Adventures of Slick Rick album. Know Your History!!!!
@mrmocha i love that album, the fact it was rushed only makes me appreciate it more, i think it goes over peoples heads coz there was the time restriction when making the album coz of him going to jail which had a small impact on the creativity when you compare it to the first album, i don't compare it though i think all his albums are full of strong tracks
"The Ruler's Back" from 1991 is not bad at all. If you revisit it with some fresh ears you might be surprised. I remember buying Homebase and The Rulers Back cd on the same day. Shelved the Fresh Prince album after I wore out Summertime, listened to Ricky D's album for years.
@david: word up that's mad love right there to save up sumthin' major to go and see The Ruler half way across the world real quick, mos def Slick is the GOAT storyteller emcee to ever live IMO and I dig his music. Yeah true, all those new mainstream money hungry niggas don't pay respect to the greats when its due, which I think is a damn shame. And MTV NEEDS MORE SLICK along with other classical dudes who killed it in their time. smh..
@fallith: i doubt he'll bring out somethin new other than the odd few features on peoples tracks, think he's sticking to touring, hopefully he'll come tour in the UK, if not i'm gonna have to save up major and come to the US and see him coz he's no doubt my favourite artist of all time, problem is new artists don't respect him or even know of him, if they did we'd see more of the ruler on our tv screens :P
obviously there's that big dumb audience who want music with content about money, drugs, guns and shit but there's a really large portion of hip-hop fans that want music with concepts on more intelligent levels Hopefully Slick pulls through with that new shit.
word, I see what you're saying and I didn't really think that there were mature slick rick fans who actually cared about the music and not the image after his first couple albums but then again you never know, well said dude.
@fallith: hell yeah, obviously there's that big dumb audience who want music with content about money, drugs, guns and shit but there's a really large portion of hip-hop fans that want music with concepts on more intelligent levels, the majority of people routing for new slick rick music fall under this large portion, i've met a lot of people at gigs and ALL of them are really conversational, mature and got a lot of hip-hop knowledge and love/dedication for the genre, what more could you want in an audience, not all youths are as naive and immature as people make em out to be
