Took me a while to warm up to this one because it's so raw and unpolished, but the remastered version on the Original Release Series really cleaned a lot of that up. It's a fantastic album, so emotionally devastating that it's brilliant. One of my favorites of his, but then again, all of his releases up until Everybody's Rockin' are.

"This has to be the most fucked up album ever. One moment he's singing about Come on baby let's go downtown and then he's depressed as fuck." Come on baby let's go downtown is equally depressing when you realize that the vocals are actually Danny Whitten's (the guy who's OD was part of the reason for the depressed feeling on this album).

"Tonight's the Night " is absolutely hypnotic. it's as good as "Harvest", It is some strange kind of Canadian, white boy, folk blues that reaches right inside you, It's the real thing, and it didn't matter if Neil couldn't carry a tune to save his life, or that the steel guitar is out of tune;yet it is pure neil, filled with unaffected emotion that could send chills down your spine.though I no longer listen to "Tonight's the Night" obsessively, or even frequently, but every time I put it on it still sounds . . . "fresh"? "unique"? It's still the real thing. "original"?

I find it hard to warm up to Borrowed Tune (though I understand the need for a lull before the Downtown storm) and Lookout Joe being on this record, since the actual S.I.R. sessions stuff is basically the best music ever made. Bring on the Briggs cut!

Simultaneously the loneliest & the most life-affirming album I've heard... quite possibly the most beautiful, too; time will tell, as it's new to me yet. On first listen, though, it sounded like I'd been waiting to hear just this album all my life.

Pfft. Know it alls. I would say that this was the more bleak album. Lyrically, this deals with actual death; OTB is more about the dark side of fame, and musically, this is clearly the more melancholy, 'depressing' album.

No I know when it was recorded and why and the circumstances. It just isn't as depressing as say, On the Beach is.

I can't listen too much to Mellow My Mind or Tired Eyes, as they scare the hell out of me.
