• Favorite Songs 002: Genesis

    9 Sep 2008, 5:16 de DukesTravels

Well, it's been a long time since I did the first installment of the favorite songs thing. I started it anticipating it to become a series that I could easily use to make for something interesting to read.

So, here at long last is another installment of my favorite songs. I'm picking up where I left off, at the top of my favorite artists list. Genesis have been my all-time favorite band since either late 1991 or 1992, right after the release of We Can't Dance. More on that later. Here we go... these picks are as of the moment and subject to my mood on any given day, of course. ;-)

Get comfortable, this is going to take a while. ;D

Sticking with studio albums and EPs:

    From Genesis To Revelation (1969)
The mainly acoustic, almost folksy first effort does have some good stuff on it. Standouts for me include The Serpent (catch the early version of Twilight Alehouse in the intro!) and In the Wilderness.

    Trespass (1970)

I’ll start with a confession. I don’t know many Genesis songs. The main reason why I went was because the songs I did know by them (the obvious ones that EVERYBODY knows) were very good, plus Phil Collins. I love that little guy. I don’t care that apparently it’s a very “uncool” thing to do: liking Phil Collins. Apparently most people are of the opinion that he’s rubbish: a rubbish singer, a rubbish writer, a rubbish drummer, a rubbish everything. Well, I don’t agree. I think he’s made of awesome, basically. Anyway. I really didn’t know what to expect. I thought they wouldn’t play a very long set, and that the concert probably wouldn’t be mind-blowing, but probably just ordinary good. I was very, very wrong.

I Started my day in Belgium, crawling out of my tent and leaving the Rock Werchter festival. I think this gives a small indication of how much I was looking forward to this gig, because Metallica , Faitheless, The Kooks and John Legend were preforming at Werchter and I sticked with Genesis. Travelling to Amsterdam was an adventure on its own. First of all, Leuven was in a complete lock down, because of the festival and it was hard to reach the central station. It is only 11 miles from Werchter and we drove one hour to reach the central station (even though we had a navigation system). Therefore I missed my train and add this to the other delays along the way, I had a total delay of 1,5 hours. Luckily I pre calculated this and arrived at the Arena half an hour before they started.
So far for the journey, lets start with the actual gig.

It was supposed to start at 19:00, but as expected no one showed up on the stage, untill 20:15. The Stage gave me an impression of a wave, but I'm still not sure what it was. …

...but Throwing it All Away by Genesis is one of the most beautiful songs in the world. I just rediscovered this song and I love the melody and the sound of his voice.

I have unguessed songs in my other journals so check them out too.

Step 1: Open up whatever MP3 program you use and add every song in your collection.
Step 2: Put it on random.
Step 3: Post your favorite couple lines from the first 30 songs that play, no matter how embarassing.
Step 4: Post and let everyone guess what song and artist the lines come from.
Step 5: Cross out the songs that someone guesses correctly.
Step 6: Looking them up on Google or any other search engine is CHEATING!

The first time I recall hearing of Genesis was probably in the pre-MuchMusic era, watching a video for That's All on some video show. It's possible that I heard them before then without being aware of it, though, because apparently my brother really liked Trespass. So my Genesis was the Phil Collins Genesis. I heard at some point that Peter Gabriel had used to be in the band, but then so did Mike Rutherford, whose Mike & The Mechanics project was going on at the time. I remember Invisible Touch and its endless stream of videos coming out around the same time as So. I couldn't reconcile Peter Gabriel with that Genesis at all.

I picked up some of the earlier Collins-era Genesis albums--Genesis and Abacab. A friend of mine, though, had a copy of A Trick Of The Tail, which I liked, though it was quite different. I eventually got a listen to "Trespass", and didn't mind that either. I filled in a few of the gaps, with Duke and And Then There Were Three, as well as From Genesis to Revelation. …
