Listening to the new Newsboys album Born Again on Rhapsody (you can listen to it free a few times through there too, or listen to it free all this week here). I like it pretty well! I'd say it's more reminiscent of Michael Tait's "solo artist" band called Tait that other stuff that Newsboys have released. I like it, in exactly the same way I like the Tait CDs - I'll spin it quite a few times, but it won't likely ever be a top-50 favorite. It lacks some of the color and quirkiness that historically have been present on Newsboys CDs, but it's very polished, very well-done pop-rock.

The cover of DC Talk's song "Jesus Freak" featuring KJ-52 on the rap part is pretty smokin', though! KJ brings a pretty aggressive rap style to the song!

(For the record... these songs are going to SMOKE live!)

So, unless you don't listen to Christian music and/or you've been hiding under a rock, you know that Newsboys have a new lead singer. Long-time lead vocalist, primary songwriter, and founding member Peter Furler has stepped down from touring and will be keeping things running at home. The new lead singer is Michael Tait, most famously of legendary but in-hiatus Christian group DC Talk but also the frontman of Tait band and artist-at-large on lots of other recordings, like !Hero: The Rock Opera. Newsboys with Mike Tait were in Tulsa last week, and we went out to see them. We had a GREAT time!

I was actually not that terribly excited about the concert... not because I didn't think Tait could handle it, because we've seen him live several times and I knew he is awesome. I think my problem was that the Newsboys' latest CD, In The Hands Of God, kind of leaves me cold. There are a few fun songs on it, but it's no Not Ashamed or Take Me To Your Leader. I was really happy with Thrive and Go, but the new one just doesn't particularly float my boat. Mikey and Cathy love it, though, so maybe I'm just too picky!

So we got our tickets, and I knew it was not a good sign when I got sixth-row balcony tickets the day before the concert. Mabee Center can hold like 11,000 people, but when we got there it can't have been more than a couple or three thousand folks there at most. Even with the upper ring darkened, it still was looking kind of empty. The fans were mostly around my age, too, which doesn't tend to be the demographic a Christian rock band looks for (I'm nearly 40). But a small turnout doesn't necessarily mean a bad show... it was a GREAT show!

I like Christian Alternative. It tells the story of life. We all sin, do wrong, and fall short of the Glory of God. But by salvation he brings us back. I am a believer and I do not always do right, but I do the best that I can.

  • Jesus Freak Single From DC Talk Review

    13 Sep 2005, 22:36 de tobymacfan

    1. Jesus Freak- This is the album version of the song which is found on a real great album called Jesus Freak. This is a awesome title track song for this album. I love this song as it's one of my favorite DC Talk songs.

    2. Jesus Freak (Gotee Remix)- This is a cool remix of Jesus Freak as my favorite part of this remix is the part where Tobymac does a little rap just before the remix is over. I enjoyed this remix and it went well with this song.

    3. I Wish We'd All Been Ready- This is the first live song on this song which is also a real good song. It can also be found on the Intermission The Greatest Hits Album.

    4. Jesus Is Just Alright- This is the second live song of this song and it's a real awesome version of this song which was on the Free At Last album. I love this song as it's one of my favorite songs from DC Talk

I'm glad I picked up this single because it's a real awesome. I'd give it a 10 out of 10 for being a great single.Jesus FreakDC Talk
