What a lousy cover. One of the main ideas of doing a cover is not that you copy _exactly_ the original song, the idea is that you play the song so that it sounds like yourself, but also so that you can recognize the original track.
I love that people have recognized this as a good cover, figured people would have ragged on it simply because a "core" band did it. Great album closer, hard to find a ballad that holds my attention as well as this one.
@Irenicus_: You're going to rag on ATR for whiny vocals, as compared to... Warrel Dane? Dane's always sounded to me like a soprano sax with a kazoo in place of the reed - whiny's his shtick. Still, bad cover - agree on that.
As a huge fan of both ATR and Nevermore, I really have to say... I never once doubted the vocal or guitar abilities of ATR until I heard this cover. Did the producer slip these guys freakin tranquilizers or something? This is the most half-hearted, lazy-assed attempt at singing/soloing I've heard from a band in a long time, cover or not. This is more like "shitty unknown opening band #1" covering ATR covering Nevermore.
Stop. This cover doesn't suck, mainly because it isn't original in any way. They just took song, played it the same way as Nevermore did and voilà. But without doubt its way worse than the original song: The vocals.. sometimes whiny and adjusted with a pitch shifter. Also the guitar playing totally lacks the energy and feeling Loomis put in it.
