• Introduction

I' started a group called "350 Songs About Global Warming" 350+Songs+About+Global+Warming (http://www.last.fm/group/350+Songs+About+Global+Warming)after hearing an inspiring talk by Bill McKibben (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bill_McKibben) and reading his new book Deep Economy (http://www.billmckibben.com/deep-economy.html). There is a worldwide movement, coordinated at the website http://www.350.org/ that is aimed at publicizing the fact that the human race must reduce its Carbon Dioxide (CO2) output to the point where a level of 350 Parts Per Million (PPM), or less, of CO2 is found in the Earth's atmosphere if it is to avoid catastrophic Global Warming (or Climate Change or whatever you want to call it).

Next big event: October 24, 2009, when hundreds of 350 actions will be taking place worldwide.

People all over the world are carrying out actions that involve doing something 350 times, assembling 350 people or pigs or pine trees etc. or collecting and displaying 350 objects. I figured that, surely, the last.fm community could put together a list of 350 songs about global warming. All you have to do to do your bit is post your song suggestion to the shoutbox. I'll update this journal from time to time with the new songs, and when we reach our goal.. oh well, I guess we'll decide when we get there whether to freeze comments or just keep going. Any suggestions as to how to publicize the results would also be great. Positive energy is greatly appreciated, and heckling, badmouthing, etc. is strongly discouraged.

May the future be one of sustainable happiness for all of us!

Elmer and Daryl "Minnesotans for Global Warming" (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qJUFTm6cJXM) a parody on "If I Had A Million Dollars" whose comic effect feeds the incorrect notion that global warming just means temperatures in cold northern places will be tropical and therefore more pleasant..

skossi666 "The Global Warming Song" (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GMugYc7ifgo&feature=related) An inscrutable vaguely sarcastic song in Icelandic.

Sonny Rollins "Global Warming" (http://www.last.fm/music/Sonny+Rollins/Global+Warming/Global+Warming) This song is instrumental, but I think it qualifies based on the fact that its name is Global Warming and it is the title song of the album in which it appears.

Leon Newton "Global Warming" (http://www.last.fm/music/Leon+Newton/_/Global+Warming). A pleasant downtempo country song about the subject.

Jack Warner "Global Warming" (http://www.last.fm/music/Jack+Warner/_/Global+Warming) A truly frightening cinematic orchestral piece: it doesn't need words to make its point.

Nunantak "Nunatak" ([urlhttp://www.theworld.org/rss/glohit.xml) by a band of scientists who constituted themselves as an indie-rock band to play the worldwide Live Earth festival in 2007.

Peggy Seeger "Bush Went To Kyoto" (http://www.last.fm/music/Peggy+Seeger/_/Bush+Went+To+Kyoto) from her "Songs For 2008" album, also on he "Songs for 2004" album.
tune: traditional (It Ain’t Gonna Rain No More) and is in Peggy's songbook under the title “Bush Has Gone to Rio”).

Bush went to Kyoto with his bag of tricks,
Bush went to Kyoto with his bunch of

PRIncipled diplomats who want to grab it all,
The thought of world democracy is just a lot of

BALderdash and nonsense, what Georgie doesn't want
Is sharing what we've got with a lot of other

COUNTries who are poor or black or just down on their luck,
So Bush is off to Rio to tell them all to

FUnd other solutions, 'cause he don't want to lose
The profits and the business, so he's prepared to

SCREW the people, screw the climate, screw the earth and then
Make the world a safer place for Yankee businessmen.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=asA2nCa8TtE "Tokyo Man (Japan's Kyoto Protocol disco song)" "TOKYO MAN" - track from Eddie Florano's "Save the World: Earth Lives or the Next Mars?" album.

Steve Earle "Amerika V6.0 The Best We Can Do" (http://www.last.fm/music/Steve+Earle/_/Amerika+v6.0+(The+Best+We+Can+Do)) This song mentions Global Warming in the last line, so it marginally qualifies. lyrics at: http://www.steveearle.net/lyrics/ly-jerusalem.php#Conspiracy%20Theory .

Ray Korona Band "Listen to the Earth" (http://www.last.fm/music/Ray+Korona+Band/_/Listen+To+The+Earth) (http://www.raykorona.com/peace%20and%20enviromental%20songs.htm) from the album "The Safe Thing To Do"

  • I'll keep adding to the Introduction

I'll keep adding songs to the Introduction, but please feel free to add comments and check back periodically. I'll try to set up a genuine playlist as soon as I've figured out the logistics. I've gotten some offers from folks to write songs about global warming... we already have a partially-written parody of "The Teddy Bears' Picnic" called "The Polar Bears' Last Picnic". I've found some sites that have collected songs related to last year's "step-it-up" campaign, and I 'll add as many of those songs to the list as are about global warming (as opposed to contributed to the cause but about something else).
