    12 Ago 2012, 18:46 de sub-bassism

Crónica is very proud to present the new release by Ephraim Wegner & Julia Weinmann, “eins bis sechzehn”, a luxurious CD + booklet edition (designed by Clovis Vallois) in a joint release with anti-matter-plant and the Kunsthochschule für Medien Koeln.

All photos and audio recordings in this work are taken inside the ruins of former hotels. If one enters such a place, first of all the impression of demolition is overwhelming, while at the same time one finds a fascinating world between decay and renewal. The history of these ruins, with their former purpose of usage as well as the changes caused by time, give the place its own organic life cycle, with plants and animals living inside the ruins and debris.

Locals from the surrounding area are looking for usable raw and building materials. And the beaches are slowly filled up again with tourists from all over the world. Reminiscences of the heyday 1960s up to the 1980s arise when extensive hotel resorts were “le dernier cri” for millions of tourists to make their individual holiday dreams come true. Non-lieus, monofunctionally used areas resembling each other by interchangeability and absence of history. Massive holiday resorts as Heterotopoi as intended by Foucault.

However, a “non-lieu” for one person may be a place for another who identifies with and establishes a special relationship to it. In each of these buildings lots of people lived for only a few days or weeks – sometimes even years – just for the length of their stay. Many short episodes and stories started and ended here, and “Lieu” and “non-lieu” become shunning poles: a “lieu” never disappears completely, just as no absolute “non-lieu” exists.

What remains are the complicated dynamics of identity and relation, of space and time. Inspired by these impressions, both artists built their own virtual hotel composed from the rooms of several ruins. The viewer / auditor is taken through this fictive hotel as a tourist, becoming part of a vacant imaginative place that tells its very own story by means of visual and audible images. The sound of gigantic concrete structures, of the nearby sea, the presence of several, quite small appearing individuals develops an independent existence and give an idea of the former activity. The photographs depict the places where the sound-recordings took place. They are linked chronologically to the composition and by showing the same localities serially they also point out to the functionality of these resorts as places for mass tourism.

In the musical sense the single photo series correspond to the stanzas or sentences of the single subjects. Although parts of the original sound material were processed by FFT or granular synthesis, there is no sound in the whole work that isn’t strictly connected to the locality of the respective picture. In both cases of sound alienation the state of the original recording — the image of a space at a certain time — serves further compositional procedure: by means of FFT certain frequencies were identified and either deleted or boosted; through the application of granular synthesis, the recorded sound is stripped down into several small sonic particles. As places can change their appearance and their atmosphere by certain, sometimes more or less overlapping events, the character of sound can be deconstructed into different time scales, can be analysed and worked on. The stronger it is joined in from the outside, the more the result emancipates itself from his origin.

duo Contour, Chris Heenan, Harald Kimmig, Michael Vorfeld, Ephraim Wegner

    Kubus³ / Kulturpark Freiburg
    08.30 pm, Entrance 10.00 Euro

On 30th of June another concert evening for electronic, impromptu and new music takes place at the Kulturpark Freiburg. While previous events such as the „Lange Nacht der elektronischen Musik“, "Music for: CPU'S, INSTRUMENTS AND OBJECTS" and "Ghost Towns" presented musicians like the ensemble chronophonie, Lawrence English and Stephan Mathieu, this evening is dedicated exclusively to duets. Guests are Heenan/Vorfeld, Kimmig/Wegner and duo Contour.

    Chris Heenan
    Michael Vorfeld

The duet Heenan/Vorfeld works since 2005 continuously on an unique and unmistakably individual sound of shimmering textures and ringing sustained tones, of lightning interaction and sudden changes of texture.

The intensity of the timbres, the unconventional instrumentation and combination of cymbals, clanging percussion, the deep spectral timbres of contrabass clarinet and the liminal reaches of the alto saxophone make HALF CLOUD, HALF PLAIN a special musical live event.

    Harald Kimmig
    Ephraim Wegner

In their musical work the duet Kimmig/Wegner focus on creating unconventional sounds. Their play is instrumental experiment as well as immediate playing interaction. The thereby emerging impromptu music dialogues contain moments of harmony as well as dissonance, astonishing sound events, consisting of clusters, sombre soundscapes and repetitive rhythmical arrangements.

By means of different synthesis technologies Ephraim Wegner creates musical spaces full of lively dynamics: Acoustic spaces become homogeneous sound structures in which the interactions of single tones and their temporal integration lead to unusual listening experiences.

Also very impressive is the universe of sounds Harald Kimmig creates on his violin.
Virtuosically he combines noises generated on the instrument with traditional violin play. T Over the years he has developed a unique, unmistakeable style.

    Stephen Altoft
    Lee Ferguson

duo Contour was formed in 1998 by the American percussionist Lee Ferguson and the English trumpeter Stephen Altoft following their participation on the Darmstadt Summer Courses for New Music, where they performed as soloists and as an ensemble. duo Contour have successfully collaborated with composers, artists and dancers, and have extended their performances through improvisation and new technologies. These objectives have led to projects and performances in Germany, Slovenia, Switzerland, Canada, the United Kingdom and the United States. The duo has been resident at the Banff Centre for the Arts, Canada, were featured in the Slowind Festival in Ljubljana, Slovenia and have been recorded by Südwest Rundfunk, Deutschland Radio Berlin, DRS2 Switzerland, and Slovenian National Radio. More Recently they gave the World Premiere of the music theatre piece, BATTAGLIA (a farce in 2 parts) by Igor Majcen at the Ljubljana Festival in Slovenia.

• LITIUM [at044] by Juan Antonio Nieto aka Pangea

    9 Sep 2011, 16:12 de pangea_100

    Litium [at044]

    Juan Antonio Nieto aka Pangea

Litium is the 2011 first release by Juan Antonio Nieto aka Pangea, the three first tracks are hard concrete music with all kinds of percussive home items and some beautiful cold and misterious drones, it's the way that he used in his last albums and live concerts, the last one is a 27 minutes track, is a changing drone inprovisation, it goes from a smooth a gentle feeling to an electronic storm of reverberations and metalic tense noises. Please be patient enough and enjoy.

Audiotalaia Netlabel is a project founded by Edu Comelles with the aim to release the work from artists all over the world. They seek for proposals in experimental sound composition, ambient music, field recordings and soundscapism.

    [ Description ]
    Digital Folk From Iceland

SWEATY PSALMS sounds like water and wood. It bubbles, whistles and rattles indefinitely, with merely seagulls to be spotted. SWEATY PSALMS has a strong organic feel, mixed with tongue in-cheek brass samples and orchestrations that compliment heavily processed field recordings. In fact, DON'T GIVE UP THE GHOST include sounds from the vehement battering of pots and pans outside the icelandic parliament, after the nations financial crash and burn of 2008.
It's inverted folkiness and warm concrete touch makes SWEATY PSALMS a remarkable album, and probably MILLE PLATEAUX's least electronic sounding album so far. So far!
