  • Bill Laswell -

    28. Dez. 2010, 22:06 von Serb2012

(Bill Laswell).

  • HAVES: KC/Lawrence (& more) Music: splits/comps

    18. Nov. 2010, 3:00 von thisisahiijack

    1. This is a journal containing bands and albums I have recordings from on my computer. Though I try to support local music as best as I can by attending shows and buying albums, not all of this music I am in direct physical possession of through purchase.
    2. Not all of the bands below are directly from the KC/Lawrence area. Other cities and towns I keep in this collection are Topeka, KS, Columbia, MO, Wichita, KS, Warrensburg, MO, Manhattan, KS, and a few other, more rural areas of the region. Essentially, it contains everything east of and including Wichita in Kansas, and everything west of and including Columbia in Missouri.
    3. In addition to the previous point, you will notice that not all of the bands here are current residents of the region. Many bands (Mates of State, White Rabbits, etc.) unfortunately decided to move away to a larger metro area. Others (The Appleseed Cast, Namelessnumberheadman), were started in different regions and then relocated here at some point, usually early in their career. …

On the works of composer John Zorn and architect Daniel Libeskind (German original 1998, translated & newly edited 2000)

„Fade out 1920s tunes, fireworks cover stutter of machine-gun fire from black cadillacs longer and lower, fade into Soviet tanks.“ (Burroughs, Interzone, p.182)

Avantgarde composer John Zorn, born in New York City in 1953, is strongly influenced by Hardcore and its British successors. Zorn studied Saxophone and Composition at Webster College, St. Louis in the early 70’s. The fragmentary, splicing, intersecting are motifs of his work with his band Naked City.

Similar to Carcass, Naked City jumbles musical references together in a whirlwind of themes newly connected in various recombinations. Opposed to the singular sound conception of grindcore/death metal to which Carcass dedicated themselves, Naked City utilizes the instrumentation of Jazz. The compositional method is fittingly described as jump-cut, reminiscent not only in name of the Burroughsian cut-up method. …

We start off with a bit of early nineties pop and dub house disco thanks to Saint Etienne with a track from their third album Tiger Bay and a Guerilla Records classic before picking up the brash and edgily shiny attitude - both retro and futuro. How fab is the ZE RECORDS retrospective on Strut - Mutant Disco!
Moody muscles in with autumnal analog from Eyeless in Gaza and stays right until the last minutes of the program, peppered with some spoken word from William S. Burroughs and Vladimir Mayakovsky, courtesy of brilliant and prolific re-issue anthropologists LTM and Sub Rosa. And Would You?

  • Speculative Fiction part 3: Nirvana never formed.

    23. Mai. 2009, 5:59 von godemperorofhel

(The Speculative Fiction series is an exercise in narrative merely done to practice my writing skills, the speculative fiction genre has reached history, but not music and it would be fun to imagine; what if Led Zeppelin never recorded Starway to Heaven? What if Grunge never had commercial success?)

    Lfm:Today we are speaking with Kurt Cobain, bassist of the legendary Sludge band Melvins. Cobain was so kind as to invite us to his home in Aberdeen, Washington with his wife, Melanie and his three kids. Cobain, now in his forties, tells us about the Seattle scene in the late eighties and late nineties;

KC: I was just a kid carrying the equipment for some friends back then, The Melvins, Boy, was I obsessed with that band! Even though I knew from high school... I knew I was being silly when I asked him to audition. I was so nervous I even forgot how to play!!! When I asked; "Can I start again?"I knew I was doomed. I went home knowing I would never make it in life, but Buzz, oh, man. …

  • Nachruf auf Robert Anton Wilson

    14. Mär. 2008, 20:24 von Nymix

    Robert Anton Wilson
    (18. Januar 1932 – 11. Januar 2007)
