The dude writes symphonies and all, but for my money this is just his best song hands down. He was trying to talk to yall in this song. I play this song for people expecting them to go "damn, this is amazing" but they not hearing my boy. They not reddy. They got that down comforter snoozin on on Sufjeezus.
"in the morning at the top of the stairs, when your father found out what we did that night and you told me you were scared" or or or "sunday night when i clean the house, i find the card where you wrote it out" wrote WHAT out? Did she leave a note for Sufjan to find letting her know that she had cancer. I mean oh my god. and then when he says "I am crying in the bathroom." with that subtle harmonization it hits home SO. HARD. simple melody, but perfect execution. "Chicago" has nothing on this.
this song reminds me of matthew 25:21 by the mountain goats. maybe it's the sad, beautiful acoustic music, maybe it's the theme of cancer, maybe it's the fact that it's in the neighborhood of just under 6 minutes. whatever it is, i love that song and i love this song
I come back to this song every once in a while. I listen to all kinds of music, but this song is one of the few that really gives me shivers all over. Breathtakingly beautiful and heartbreaking at the same time.
